Mohana plains is the most famous and the biggest plain in Akagera national park on the eastern side of Rwanda seconded by Kilala plains. Mohana plains are strategically located in Akagera national park about 3 hours’ drive from Kigali the capital city of Rwanda.

The Mohana plains is an extensive area with a large concentration of wild animals and birds and its located in the extreme north of Akagera national park where lake Rwanyakazinga is located.

Driving along lake Rwanyakazinga road traveling through Mohana plains gives you a unique opportunity to see the African lions that stay around this area. Tourists also have an opportunity to see semi-aquatic animals such as hippos although they love to scare away people buts this is a chance for you to see them roar, crocodiles and different bird species can also be spotted when you are in this place including herds of elephants on the lake shores taking water.

The northern entrance also known as Nyungwe gate is where you can find these hippos where tourists on a game drive safari in Rwanda may need a full day to see these animals and many others. This area is good for birdwatching, game viewing, sightseeing, and photography all these can be done in one area as you have breathtaking views of the area and off-beaten nature. While on a game drive on Mohana plains, expect to see animals such as zebras, buffaloes, topis, impalas, cape elands, roan antelopes. Lions, giraffes, and many others.

Other nearby attractions to Mohana plain to visit in Akagera national park include Kilala plains, Nyampiki peninsula, Magishi peninsula, giraffe area loop, Kitabili loop, and many others.

Mohana plains in Akagera national park are good to visit during the dry months of the year and these happen from June to September and again from December to February. During this season, the park trails are always dry with passable roads making it easy for tourist doing game drives to conduct their activities unlike in the wet season when there are heavy rains which makes the ground muddy and slippery. However, the wet season is good for bird lovers and it happens in March, April, May, October, and November.

Mohana plains form the vast northern sector of Akagera national park which is on the eastern side of Rwanda about 2 to 3 hours’ drive from the capital city of Kigali Rwanda. You are advised to use a good and comfortable 4-wheel drive safari vehicle to explore this portion of the park. You can as well use helicopters from Akagera aviation from Kigali international airport to Akagera national park for just 25 minutes
