Day 1: Transfer To Nyungwe Forest National Park

Information about Hirwa gorilla family

Hirwa gorilla family is among the mountain gorilla families found in the Virunga conservation Area. This family has unique habits that distinguish it the other groups. This family group features on the most trekked species and trekkers like to trek them. You will like it when you visit this family.

Hirwa is local name in Kinyarwanda meaning lucky one. This family was named Hirwa because it was luck that used to manifest itself so many times and one of the luckiest thing that happened in this group was the birth of twins in 2011. Hirwa gorilla group is such a lucky family that was blessed with twins.

This gorilla group was created in 2006 with some individuals of Sabyinyo gorilla family with more 13 members from the Agashya. Recently other members joined the family and the tally went to 16 including 1 dominant silverback. The silverback always looks for new members and he likes to see his family size grow and due to luck the family members have grown up by luck and many have joined the groups as well.

The silverback is dominant, strong and determined to keep protecting all his members in the gorilla group.

Hirwa gorilla family currently leaves in the foothills of the 2 Virunga Volcanoes- Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga.

The trekking skill level is hard depending on the location of the gorilla family plus energy and ability of the traveler. Trekking the steeps of mountain Sabyinyo and Mountain Gahinga is difficult but rewarding at last.

One should be prepared and ready to experience a hectic and a physical challenging trek that is habituated. You will watch the daily activities like grooming each other, playing, feeding, moving and displaying their gestures.
