What is the size of Akagera National Park? Yes, Akagera national park size is 1,120 sq. km and its one of the oldest national parks in Africa established in 1934. Akagera national park is found in eastern side Rwanda on the border with Tanzania and it comprises of woodland, swamps, savannah and low mountains.

The size of Akagera national park was originally bigger than 1,120 sq. km but because of human encroachment by refugees from Rwanda’s civil wars returning to live in the rea in the 1990s, destroying the environment through cattle keeping and poaching. The government of Rwanda reduced the size of the park and gave some part to new residents to stay.

In the southern side of the park is Lake Ihema a home to crocodile and hippos. The park has other lakes such as Lake Shakani, Lake Birengero, Lake Mihindi, Lake Kivumbi, Lake Murambi and many others.
