What is the size of Akagera National Park? Yes, Akagera national park size is 1,120 sq. km and its one of the oldest national parks in Africa established in 1934. Akagera national park is found in eastern side Rwanda on the border with Tanzania and it comprises of woodland, swamps, savannah and low mountains.

The size of Akagera national park was originally bigger than 1,120 sq. km but because of human encroachment by refugees from Rwanda’s civil wars returning to live in the rea in the 1990s, destroying the environment through cattle keeping and poaching. The government of Rwanda reduced the size of the park and gave some part to new residents to stay.

Game viewing in Akagera national park is almost most fairly low – lying grasslands and savannah plains, similar in feel to the north of the park traditional safari areas of east Africa.

In the west of the park you find rolling hills and valleys more typical of Rwanda countryside whereas to the east of the park are series of lakes, papyrus swamps and marshes that create central and eastern largest protected wetlands of Africa. Akagera is a small park but it has a variety of habitats, birds and wildlife as well as some lovely scenery.

Akagera national park is a home to animals such as hyenas, lions, buffaloes, zebras, rhinos, elephants, leopards, tipos, impalas, elands, and different bird species such as fish eagle, scared and hadada ibis, pied cow, long crested eagle, grew crown crane, squacco herons among others. In the southern side of the park is Lake Ihema a home to crocodile and hippos. The park has other lakes such as Lake Shakani, Lake Birengero, Lake Mihindi, Lake Kivumbi, Lake Murambi and many others.

The recently concluded perimeter fence and anti-poaching measures have created a big difference to the parks animal population and the national park is now doing well on the process of restoring it, while its wildlife is not as much as those in other national parks, there is still a lot to see and do in Akagera national park for a safari. Such activities offered to guests at this national park include game drives, behind the scenes, boar cruise, nature walk, birding, sport fishing and many others that make your safari memorable.

Many tourists combine Akagera game drive safari with the visitor to volcanoes national park which is the most visited park in Rwanda for a chance to meet eye to eye with mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. You have a chance to visit Nyungwe forest national park for chimpanzee trekking, canopy walk and colobus monkey trekking. There is also Gishwati Mukura national park famous for primate watching.
