Tall Trees Of Nyungwe Forest National Park Rwanda

Tall trees of Nyungwe forest national park cover a total area of over 970sq.km with and an elevation of 1600-2950m. Rwanda is blessed with a lot of natural habitats like Nyungwe forests which is the only park in the country having about 300 colobus monkeys living within its tall trees.

Exploring the tall trees in the Nyungwe forest is also an amazing experience in the forest.  Nyungwe forest is the second largest remaining montane rainforest in Rwanda and it has the most biodiversity that contains huge and tall trees of different species that are have been there for many years. These trees support most of the wildlife in the forest such as the 13 primate species and a lot of forest bird species. Some of the common tree species that can be found in Nyungwe forests are carapa, prinaria exelsium, cyathea manniana, mosses, newtonia, orchids, ferns, podocarpus.  Researchers are also recommended to visit Nyungwe forest national park.

Other Activities that can be combined with exploring the tall trees in Nyungwe forest national park are;

Colobus Monkey Tracking in Nyungwe forest.

Colobus monkey tracking is also among the top amazing tourist attraction in Nyungwe forest national park. The colobus monkey tracking is a short hike that is about 2-3 hours to complete the trek, and it is much easier than chimpanzee trekking.  Once you meet Colobus monkeys in Nyungwe forest national park you will be amazed how large the group is of over 350-400 individuals. This activity is also best for the visitors with plenty of time and it does not require porters during the trek.

Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest.

The Canopy walk experience in Nyungwe forest national park is one of the best activities carried out in the forest, and it is done at 8:00 am, 10:00 am/3:00 am.  For those who do not fear the heights, it is good to give it a try. It begins from Uwinka visitor Centre to complete the canopy walk experience, it takes about 2 hours. The Canopy walk bridge is deferred amid the huge trees which one may feel of the fresh air because it is 60meters above the forest floor. The freshness you get from the air and the fascinating aerial view of the trees will enable you to explore the sounds of birds that are seen flying all over the walk.

Chimpanzee trekking

You can also combine chimpanzee trekking which is the most interesting experience in Nyungwe forests. Set out at dawn with your guide and he takes you to the place where you will see a group of chimpanzees, including alpha males and a lot of females with babies. Get closer and spend 1 hour with them, interact and enjoy their lifestyle like eating habits, nesting, how mothers feeding their young ones among others.

Bird watching

Bird lovers can also watch various bird species while exploring the tall trees in Nyungwe forest national park, These are some of the common bird species that can be encountered by bird lovers in Nyungwe forests include the Caprimulgus Ruwenzori, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Ruwenzori Batis, Alehe poliophrys, Purple-breasted and Blue-headed, Ruwenzori Apalis, Dusky Crimson Wing, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Rwenzori Turacos, Francolinus nobilis, Ruwenzori Nightjar, Neumann’s Warbler, Apalis argentea, Kungwe Apalis, Regal Sunbird, Kupeornis rufocinctus, Handsome Francolin, Red-collared Babbler, and many more. Birding in Nyungwe forest national park can be arranged as a short nature walk in the morning of full-day or evening.

Nyungwe forest national park is blessed with many different kinds of primate species, a lot of bird species, amazing hiking trails, and among others, even though it has amazing tourist attractions but You can also spare time and visit other national parks in Rwanda such as Volcanoes national park which is a natural habitat for the few remaining mountain gorillas or visit Akagera national park a famous park for wildlife animals in Rwanda such as the rhinos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, lions, leopard.
