Mount Sabinyo

Mount Sabinyo is located in Mgahinga national park in Uganda and it is among the 8 Virunga volcanoes good for hiking trips and safaris in Uganda

The mountain offers an amazing hiking experience in Uganda. The mountain is a dormant volcano and it is not a threat to the hikers and the people who are around it.

This is not the same as the other volcanoes that the other mountains are found at the border or in one, Mountain Sabinyo is found in the 3 Virunga countries of Rwanda, DR Congo and Uganda.

Once you are hiking to the top, just know you will be in the countries with one Visa at once as how many tourists always joke. It’s a fascinating experience that you should not miss out.

Sabyinyo has got a rugged terrain that has got a lot of craters on the slopes with alot of ridges. The mountain is not like the other mountains where trekking can be done in one country, the trekking of this mountain is a bit challenging because the trails are made of handmade ladders which are met to help you with such steep sections.

Sabyinyo hiking is also done in one day and it lasts for almost 4 hours while climbing and 4 hours downward. However, it depends on the speed you put in and the current weather.

Mountain Sabinyo is an extinct volcano found in the ranges of Virunga.  The other mountains that are found in the ranges of Virunga include Mount Karisimbi, Muhabura, Bisoke, Mikeno, Nyiragongo, Gahinga and Nyamuragira. Mountain Sabinyo is separated from Muhabura by the Crater Lake which is 20m in Diameter. Sabinyo is locally known as the old man’s tooth.  The reason is the jagged summit looks that look as if they are worn out teeth if compared to the other summits that are leveled with the neighboring mountains. Mountain Sabinyo is just 12,037 ft high with a summit acting as a border for the 3 countries that is Uganda, DR Congo and Rwanda. The mountain slopes commonly act as the habitats for the endangered mountain gorillas plus the other animals such as buffaloes, elephants, antelopes and various forests. The hiking at mountain Sabinyo is such challenging because it has got rugged slopes and craters on its sides that have formed many ridges.

Hiking mount Sabinyo is only done in Uganda at this time since the route has not yet been formed among the sharp ridges in Rwanda and Congo side. The government of Rwanda is planning to form the route through the ridges and craters for the tourists who would like to stand the adventure from Rwanda.

Hiking Mount Sabinyo from Uganda.

Mountain Sabinyo in Uganda is found in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This is a wonderful experience that you should not miss out. Despite the crater lakes and sharp ridges before the last peak, the Uganda Wildlife Authority tried to solve this problem by trying to construct handmade ladders.

Before starting the hike, you need to try to register with the office park and sign in the guest book and later you clear all the remaining payments. Hiking mountain Sabinyo also starts with a briefing. Rangers and guides will tell you what you need and what you should expect. If you fail to reach the summit by 3 pm, you will be advised to slope down since it will already be too late for you to climb to the top of the summit. A walking stick is given to all hikers and you should keep it all the time. You can hire also porters to help you carry your equipment. Locals can also act as your escorts throughout the trip. An armed ranger and an official guide are also available to help you to be protected from dangerous animals such as elephants.

When the briefing is over, you will pass through the flat area that has got various swamps. You can begin climbing to an area that has got thick vegetation zones that have roughly 2390 to 2800 meters. This area is surrounded by bamboo and is the best place for habituating the golden monkeys. When the first zone is over, you will meet buffaloes, elephants and mountain gorillas.  It is a home of rare Rwenzori Turaco and sub-alpine vegetation will be encountered too. It is found in the Albertine rift Valley only. By the end of touring the zone, you will have seen the summit ahead.

The good thing about climbing Mount Sabinyo is that you will be in 3 countries using one VISA and the countries are Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. You will meet the best weather viewing as you are at the summit trying to watch Lake Kivu in Rwanda and DR Congo. You will spot Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda and over 6 other mountains of the famous Virunga region plus other many features. Congo is sparsely populated whereas Rwanda is densely populated. Descending is seen to be easier but I can tell you it is a bit challenging.
