Mahura forest is a tropical rainforest which is found in Congo and is among the many attractions in the DR Congo. It is found in the northern parts of Virunga National Park which is right next to Rumangabo where the park headquarters are. The forest is a great wonder and you can be able to visit the 2 primate species of DR Congo and these are Chimpanzees and mountain gorillas. It is the same place where Mikeno lodge is found in the heart of the forest.

The chimpanzees of Mahura forest are habituated and can be visited any time you feel like and have adjusted to having human presence within their territory. While on chimpanzee trekking in Virunga National Park, trekkers are required to participate in habituating process of the Chimpanzee family in Mahura forest which is found in Rumangabo. Chimpanzee habituation was on going in the park in the early 2000s but with time many chimps started dying because of human diseases and it ended by 2014. The political unrest also had threatened the activity because the rebels used Mahura forest as a hiding place and therefore to do a tourism activity was impossible but now the situation is stable and tourism activity is freely ongoing in the area.

Mountain gorilla orphanage is also found in Rumangabo sector of Mahura forest which is in the compound of Mikeno Lodge. The orphan gorillas are kept in this forest with the help of skilled team of caretakers.

Mahura forest is also full of monkeys that is colubus monkey’s and blue monkeys, white colobus and Angolan black, they are located in the dense rainforests plus the coastal and lowland regions. These are also found in the Congo basin and in the North East of the Congo River. You will also spot various bird species in Congo and in Mahura forest. You will spot bird species such as Ruwenzori Turaco bird, francolinus nobils, Rwenzori batis, grey- throated barbet and many bird species.
