Karisimbi gorilla family is one of the gorilla groups in volcanoes national park led by a silverback called Nyagakangaga, Karisimbi gorilla family leaves on the slopes of Mountain Karisimbi which is the highest mountain with steep slopes among the Virunga volcanoes.

This gorilla group broke off from Susa gorilla family in 2009. Their bitter split sliced down a number of gorillas from Susa gorilla family which was the biggest gorilla family by then with about 42 individuals to approximately 26 members exclusive of their silverbacks.

Nyagakangaga parted ways along with 13 members and went far away to begin their own gorilla family. Karisimbi group was first called Susa B but later its name was changed to Karisimbi gorilla family in the year of 2010. This group lives around the lower slopes of Mountain Karisimbi.

This gorilla group was having 15 members but unfortunately some of their members left the group and joined other groups and today Karisimbi gorilla family has 11 members among which include 4 silverbacks, 1 adult female, 1 black back and 2 infants.

This gorilla family is one of the hardest families hard to trek. The group lives near the caldera in mountain Karisimbi. Some days it can take you up to a full day to allocate them and on some cases they move to a much attitude making it impossible to allocate them. But this shouldn’t worry because the park rangers are well skilled to allocated them within a short time and inform fellow rangers if they come across them so as to keep them away from trekking long distances.

If you want to see how fit you are then Karisimbi mountain gorilla group should be what you go for when trekking gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Locating them might not be easy but once you find them you will have an hour with them get to know their habits and behaviors, what they eat, how they live in the wild among others and you are also allowed to take photos and record moments with these mountain gorillas
