Cyangugu Town is found on the southern edge of Lake Kivu hence making it a window to Lake Kivu and is stretches to Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and it is separated by River Ruzizi. Cyangugu town is the biggest and Capital City of Rusizi district in the Western Province of Rwanda.

This active town features 2 main settlement areas that are Kamembe which is known as the best town for transport and industrial areas in the inland to the North with high population density and Cyangugu itself which is found along Lake Kivu with a low population density of about 63,883 people according to the 2015 population census. Cyangungu is served by Kamembe International Airport with at least 11 weekly flights to Kigali International Airport as well as Kamembe town.

Attractions And Things To Do

During your trip, you can visit Lake Kivu and enjoy swimming if you are interested, boat ride or you can do kayaking dug-out canoes.

Cyangugu is the closest town to Nyungwe forest national park which is about 54 kilometers along Butare road and takes like 1 hour’s drive to reach this famous national park in Rwanda for unique chimpanzees, and other tourist activities such as Canopy walk experience, bird watching, nature walks, colobus monkey tracking and among others.

Tourists to this town can also visit Mashesha hot springs and get a chance to see the boiling water oozing from the earth’s crust.

How To Get To Cyangugu Town

Cyangugu town is found in the Western parts of Rwanda in the Rusizi district.  it can be accessed on both public and private means, you can use a minibus from Kigali city to Butare or regular buses which are lasting for about 6 hours.
