Currently there are 4 habituated gorilla families in Buhoma and these include;

Habinyanja Gorilla Family
This is also one of the gorilla families found in Buhoma and this was habituated in 1997 and later opened to tourists in 1999. The group was living close to swamp with some pool of water hence the bearing of its name Habinyanja. Mugurusi was the head by then but later Mwirima and Rwansigazi succed him since these were Mugurusi brothers. The two brother had different characters and because Rwansigazi used to travel a lot, he formed his group called Rushegula braking away from Habinyanja gorilla family. Currently Makara silver back head this group and it has got 17 family members.
Rushegura Gorilla Family
As earlier seen, this group in Buhoma was split from Habinyanja gorilla family and was available for tourists to see in 2002. The group started with only 8 members but it has increased it members to 19 members. It keeps wondering at the border between Uganda and democratic republic of Congo and sometimes it crosses into Congo and then comes back
Katwe gorilla family
This is the new gorilla family to be added to the tally of gorilla families in Buhoma gorilla trekking sector Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park. Only 3 years were enough for this gorilla family to be fully habituated and was opened for tourist to track after it was fully habituated. The groups feature 4 females, 2 babies and a dominant silver back. The group keeps on moving and it was founded in 2018 and the addition of this gorilla family increased the gorilla permits available in Buhoma sector hence more revenue generation for the conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas.

As of now, there is no direct flight to Buhoma and what flight companies do is to land at Kihihi airstrip and then be transferred to Buhoma specifically at your booked lodge. By road, you will travel for about 8 to 10 hours to reach the Buhoma gorilla trekking sector from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala and here you will pass via Mbarara city and then to Kabale town and from Kabale, you proceed to Buhoma.
