Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino sanctuary is located near Nakitoma village in Nakasongola district in River Kafu basin 176 km north of Kampala Gulu high way towards Murchison falls National Park. It was established in 2005 with a goal to build a sustainable Rhinoceros population and relocate rhinos back to their original habitant in Uganda’s protected areas. This was because of prolonged armed human conflict and poaching in 1982 because all species had been wiped out of the country. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where Rhinos are kept. Rhino fund Uganda manages the sanctuary but it’s working hand in hand with Uganda Wildlife Authority

Ziwa started with a total of 6 animals where four were bought from Kenya and two donated from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in United States Orlando Florida. The Rhino population has now grown to 22 Rhinos. The sanctuary over 300 bird species i.e. shoebill, Abdim’s Stork, Blue spotted dove, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Booted eagle, African Black Crake, Broad billed Roller, African Black-headed Oriole,  Bronze Manikini,  African Blue Flycatcher, Brown-backed Scrub Robin,  African Broad Bill, Brown-crowned Tchagra,  African Citril, brown parrot, African darter, ruff among others

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is also a habitant of 40 animals which include monkeys, antelopes, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, hartebeests, water bucks, oribis, Uganda kobs among others so which at Ziwa you can do nature walk and see animals, birding, rhino trekking, shoebill trekking and canoe ride and you can enter the territory of the southern white rhinos on foot and trek the whole day with guided rangers who will guide you through the bush. Here you will get an opportunity to watch white Rhinos in their habitants as these Rhinos are free to move over 7000 hectares of land, you can use your car to go see where rhinos  are or you can hire vehicles and a driver of rhino funds Uganda .

What to do at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

There so much to do at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in nakasongola as follows.

Rhino tracking. This is a major activity at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. During Rhino tracking you get to see endangered Rhinos on foot and get to watch them closer at a distance of 6 meters, you can take pictures of rhinos feeding and learn their habits too you can as well encounter a range of wildlife species i.e. monkeys, Uganda kobs and birds such as the shoebill . Note when you add Ziwa Rhino sanctuary to Murchison falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park you  get to see the big five animals in Uganda.

Birding. Ziwa rhino sanctuary has over 300 bird species and has four bird trials which cover woodlands, savannah and swamp. Birding can either be done on a guided nature walk or a boat where you will be guided by experienced birder guides  here you get to see birds like red- headed weaver, red- knobbed swallow, shoebill, grew crowned crane. Grey heron, black kite among others.

Nature walks. These can take a half a day with  well-trained guides as you hike through the sanctuary where you will see animals like monkeys, oribis, crocodiles, Uganda kob, reed bucks, bush bucks,  monitor lizards, gray duikers among others birds such as shoebill, olive sunbird, eagle, black kite among others. The guide will as well share with you the botanical names of plans and vegetation.

Shoebill trek and canoe ride. One of the most sought of birds to be seen in Uganda is the shoebill and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is one of the places to see this bird with in the swamps best done early morning at 06 hrs. It takes you 4 hours and  this will help you also see water birds i.e. Egyptian goose, giant kingfisher, African open billed stork, African fish eagle, goliath heron, African jacana among others.

How to get to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakasongola district near Nakitoma village in North East of Kampala on an area of 7000 meters. It’s a 3 hour drive from Kampala to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary with a distance of 176 km using Kampala Gulu high way

Accommodation at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. It has restaurant where you can go and have your meals and it has accommodation facilities too i.e. Amuka lodge. There are camping facilities as well at the sanctuary. And visitors wanting to go to Ziwa are required to pay $30 if interested in activities other than rhino tracking, $65 for all activities combined and $5o dollars for rhino tracking only.
