River Nile in Uganda

The following are the major tourist activities that can be done on river Nile in Uganda. Most activities are done at the source of the river in Jinja and Murchison fall national park Uganda

River Nile In Uganda

River Nile passes through Murchison falls national park the country’s biggest and oldest national park in Uganda with an area of 3893 sq. kilometers located in north western Uganda. River Nile bisects the park into northern and southern sector flowing from the east to the south of the park. River Nile is a home to Nile crocodiles and hippopotamuses as well as many aquatic birds such as shoebill stork, osprey, moorhen, blue winged goose, ducks and geese. Murchison falls National Park has not only got birds but also 76 mammals i.e. lions, elephants, bush bucks, giraffes and 451 bird species

It’s the longest river in the entire world with its sources at Jinja district in Uganda crossing over ten countries that’s Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Democratic republic of Congo, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Egypt. River Nile starts its journey in Jinja Uganda and flows 6500 kilometers until emptying into Mediterranean Sea in Egypt with two major branches i.e. White Nile and Blue Nile. River Nile is a source of hydroelectric power from Owen falls dam in Jinja district and Karuma at Murchison falls National Park, source of irrigation and water transport among others.

The White Nile is longer one of the two main tributaries of River Nile name coming from the coloring due to clay carried in the water and it passes through Sudan, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda while the Blue Nile is the source of most water passing through Egypt and Sudan after emerging with the White Nile in Khartoum in Sudan

Activities at River Nile

The following are the major tourist activities that can be done on river Nile in Uganda. Most activities are done at the source of the river in Jinja and Murchison fall national park Uganda

Sport fishing

Sport fishing at Albert Nile will give you a memorable safari experience with the most common fish caught being tiger fish, electric cat fish, babel fish, Nile perch, barbell, Angara, yellow fish and ferocious fighter among others and fishing is restricted to some areas and mainly done by boat so it’s better to book early so as to make your activities easier when you arrive

White water rafting

River Nile is a place of best water rafting in the world and it’s done throughout the year thanks to Uganda’s equatorial weather. The experience is the best with warm waters, beautiful scenery and sunshine

Visiting Murchison falls

The falls are the strongest water falls in the world and can be reached on a launch boat cruise at the Nile. Here tourists can take 45 minutes and walk to the top of the falls six meters high and hear sounds of waters flowing with placid streams to the lake

Boat cruising

This is one of the top tourism activities and the most entertaining activity done in the park among all other activities, it helps you do birding, see water animals like the hippos and Nile crocodiles and hike to the top of the falls if you book a boat cruise as a lot of tourists come to Murchison falls national park to go watch the strongest water falls in the world
