Nkuringo Sector of Bwindi Forest National Park

Nkuringo sector is found in the southern regions of Bwindi Forest Park in Uganda. Uganda protects 400 mountain gorillas which is a half of the remaining gorillas in the world. The park has four sectors and Nkuringo sector is among them.

Bwindi is a world heritage and is a tourist destination which has the highest number of mountain Gorillas in the world. Gorillas can be found on volcano slopes in Mgahinga National Park.

In the part of Bwindi Forest is where you will find Nkuringo gorilla family that got its name after the rolling hills. In 2004, the habituation of the family was launched. Hills are highly seen when visiting the Nkuringo sector.

Nkuringo gorilla family has got 12 individuals and they undergo a habituation process. The family members of this group were commonly found in Villages and because of destroying people’s crops, they were habituated. This group was later opened for tourism and in this case the community had to benefit.

Nkuringo sector has Nkuringo family only and the famous silverback was the leader of the family in 2008, later silverbacks Safaari and Rafiki took the leadership role of the family. In the very year, the family received the birth of twins from Kwitonda the twin mother. The twins were called Katungi and Muhozi thus the family expanded but in just 2 years, Katungi died.

Nkuringo sector has various activities that happen to take place and gorilla trekking is known as the main activity. Other activities include community walks, exploring the cultures of the local people through sharing meals and stories. Interact with the Batwa to learn about their daily ways of living and how they survived when still leaving in the forest since they the first people to live in the region.

You can also spare some time and visit community schools so as to interact with the children in the schools and also learn how they are knowledgeable but they do not learn with computers.

Tracking in Nkuringo requires one to be physically fit and energetic. This is a tough trail in Bwindi to use for gorilla trekking. However when then rewarding gorilla experience is over, you will not complain of the hardships you met on the way.

Nkuringo Community Conservation and Development Foundation (NCCDF) is found in Nkuringo of Bwindi forest which also doubles to be on the hillside that borders Bwindi and extends to view Congo. A traveler will appreciate the rugged roads and rolling hills encountered when driving to Nkuringo. Indeed Nkuringo has beautiful scenery and wonderful cultural experience for one to explore.

NCCDF supports the women of the community in training them head craft shops and you should watch how the locals make as they will also sale them to you the visitor. Also the development trains orphans on how to perform and sing for visitors at the close lodges. You can also have a stopover at Nicalas which is the blacksmith that dates way back in the Stone Age where by Nicolas hammers changed to Pangas, hoes, arrows and utensils.

You will watch a lot of traditional huts, apparatus for distilling waragi, grinding stones, cooking pots and much more. You can decide to visit the traditional healer that uses herbs from the forest to heal people. It is a wonderful exploration to see how amazing a local doctor knows most of the local herbs and what they treat. Community members are lovely and they welcome everyone in their homes.

Take a tour in the village and interact with community workers as they do various activities like washing, sharing meals, grinding food for eating and among others. Guides are available to take you through community walks because they know all activities done by this developing sector.
