Mammals in Kidepo National Park. Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the northeast of Uganda in Kaabong district lying in a semi-arid area with savanna vegetation. It lies between Uganda borders with South Sudan and Kenya. Kidepo Valley National Park is on an area of about 1442 square kilometers and is the most isolated national park in Uganda. It has gotten 2 rivers which include the River. Kidepo and River Narus. Kidepo Valley National Park has got local communities around the park especially those known as the Ik which are known for their traditional activity of hunting and beekeeping. The other prominent people around Kidepo Valley National Park include the Karamajong who is known for cattle keeping and unique culture that attracts visitors

Kidepo Valley National Park has been a good safari destination because of too many mammal species. It’s a home of over 85 species live in Kidepo valley national park that 28 of them not found anywhere else in Uganda’s national parks. The mammals in the national park include the cheetah, aardwolf, caracal, mountain reedbuck, greater, and Guenther’s dik. The park is unique with semi aide climate and some mammals in the park withstand long drought of high temperature and no rainfall

The animals in Kidepo Valley  National park are key natural features in the park that attract visitors to come and visit the amazing destination the mammals in Kidepo Valley National Park are seen during the game drives in the park. Common mammals often seen in the park are elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, and cheetah among others.

There are also mammals like Africa elephant, buffalo, back backed jackal, waterbuck, Jackson’s hartebeest, lion, Oribi, warthog, Impalas, Nile crocodile, fox, and so many others but hippos are not found in the park. Kidepo valley national park is well known for its fauna better than any other in Uganda’s national parks. It’s rich in predators like leopards, lions, and bat-eared foxes.

Kidepo valley national park has 12 antelopes species which among others include, oribis, Uganda kob, bushbucks, Jackson’s hartebeest, Oribi, Eland, and klipspringer

Kidepo valley national park is the best place to see lions resting on the rocks and large herds of buffalo as well as giraffes and zebras.

However, Kidepo Valley National Park is also a habitat for five species of primates like the rare patas monkey, the Kavirondo bushbaby, and the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe the park has also got over 470 species of birds making it the best birding area following queen Elizabeth national park sixty of these birds haven’t been recorded anywhere in Uganda’s national parks. The birds to keep an eye on including the unique ostrich, Karamajong Apalis, red-throated bee-eater, Verreaux’s eagle, koris bustard, and pygmy Falco.

Kidepo Valley National Park has not only got mammals the park has also got so many attractions apart from birds like Unique Ostrich, Rare Kori bustard, silver bird, black-breasted barbet, red-billed woodpecker, woodpecker among others. The park has got so many attractions such as the best game drive in Uganda mostly in the Narus River where animals like buffalo and elephants drink water, the Apoka tourism Centre, Narus River, Kidepo valley and Kanangorok hot springs, Mount Morongule, Namamukweny valley, Lomej hills and Lonyili Mountain not forgetting the Karamajong culture.

Kidepo valley national park is a good place to visit because of so many wildlife species not found elsewhere in any other national park in Uganda and sometimes its environment and scenic look match more than that of Masai Mara National Park in Kenya or Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
