Lake Nyarakigugu is one of the most stunning lakes located in Rwanda. Lake Nyarakigugu is found on Musanze – Ruhengere road with good opportunities for fishing and birding tour. Many visitors who come to Rwanda and those going to volcanoes national park for gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

Lake Nyarakigugu has nearby lakes such as Lake Karago, this is found between Rubavu and Musanze district with a big number of fish population.

Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera

Lake Ruhondo and Burera are twin lakes that are found in Rwanda at the base of mountain Muhabura. These beautiful lakes are located just close to the border of Uganda and Rwanda at the edges of volcanoes national park in Musanze district. Volcanoes national park is famous for endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.

Twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera were formed as a result of volcanic activity, where River Nyabarongo which is the largest river in Rwanda used to flow north wards to Ndorwa for a number of years ago this part was for Rwandan side but as of now it belongs to Uganda. Because of volcanic eruption which took place in the volcanic region in the northern side of Rwanda, the lava flows from mountains blocked Nyabarongo river channel and led to formation of these twin lakes Ruhondo and Burera.

There are boat cruises at lake Ruhondo and lake Burera where you get see a number of aquatic animals and birds such as African crown crane, cormorant, scared ibis, hadada ibis, African fish eagle, black sawing weaver, yellow bill storks and yellow bill ducks. While on a boat cruise at Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera, you will see people transporting good on sampan and others fishing in the lakes.

The areas around Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera with its swamp called Rugezi are excellent photogenic, peaceful and scenic places for not only bird lovers in volcanoes national park Rwanda but also sightseeing as one of the good places in east Africa.
