Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park

The magnificent Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park is located at the escarpments of the East African rift valley and drains the Lake Edward through the mighty Kazinga channel. Lake Gorge was named after the British royal family member prince who later became King George the V, Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park is shallow with a depth of about 2.4 meters and is supplied by the splendid Ruwenzori mountain ranges streams including Mubuku, dura, Katonga, Rumi, and river Mpanga.

Also known as Lake Dweru, the lake was designed as a Ramsar wetland system in March 1998 and the bordering papyrus swamps are habitat to the sitatunga antelopes. The European explore H.M Stanley is believed to the forest explore to see Lake George in 1875 after following the course of Lake Katonga river directly from Lake Victoria.  At first, he baptized this lake Beatrice Gulf after he thought that both Lake George and Albert were one lake but he realized during his second visit that the lakes were separate and named it Lake George.

Lake George drains to Lake Edward through the mighty Kazinga channel which streams with a lot of wildlife species at the shores and is concentrated by hippos in the inner waters. This is a wonderful channel where the main boat cruise safaris in Queen Elizabeth National do take place.

With two rainy seasons that is May and October, the lake is an extremely productive and profitable fishery venture and therefore one can visit the nearby fishing villages and interact will locals, and learn about their ways of life and the different fishing methods.

The lake contains three major islands of Akika, Iraquara, and Kankuranga and provides tourists with many activities apart from outstanding views, small boat canoes are also available to take you via the water as you enjoy fishermen fishing with different skills.

Wildlife viewing at Lake George offers a great chance of seeing the interesting Sitatunga antelopes found at the papyrus swamp of the Northern shores of the lake. Sitatungas are so unique and interesting bird species that attract visitor’s interests.

Still, the lake features other bird species some of which are migratory birds while others are residents including the rare and Uganda’s most sought shoebill stork. Visitors can as well engage in cruise safari at this lake providing a chance of viewing aquatic birds and animals. A nature guided walk around the lake offers great views of birds and magnificent scenery.
