Where to go for gorilla watching safari experiences in Uganda

With a few mountain gorillas left in the whole world, mountain gorillas are only found in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Uganda. Bwindi has 19 gorilla habituated families that are open up for trekking and Mgahinga has only one.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

This is located across the steep ridges of the Albertine rift in south western part of Uganda. The park is a home to a half of the total remaining mountain gorillas in the whole world. Bwindi impenetrable forest is one of the ancient rainforest left in Africa. The park is a home to over 120 mammal species, 10 primate species, 350 bird species and 160 tree species among others

In Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, gorilla watching safari and trekking in done in 4 sectors namely Buhoma which is found in the north with gorilla families like Katwe, Habinyanja, Mubare and Rushegura. Nkuringo sector in the south with Bushasho, Christmas and Nkuringo. Ruhija sector with Mukiza, Kyaguliro, Butikura and Orugozo. And lastly Rushaga sector with Mishaya, Kahungye, Rwizi, Busingye, Mucunguzi, Nshongi and Kutu.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga national park is located at the extreme southwestern part of the country about 9 – 10 hour’s drive from Kampala or Entebbe international airport. The park is located on the northern slopes of Virunga Mountains Mount Muhabura, Mount Mgahinga and Mount Sabinyo.

Mgahinga national park is just 10 km south of Kisoro and south of the park you find Rwanda and west of the park is DR Congo. Mgahinga national park has only one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi that is open up for gorilla tourism.

Best time to go for gorilla watching and trekking in Uganda

Although gorilla watching and trekking safari can be done throughout the year, Uganda has two significant seasons the dry and the wet season. Visitors planning to trek mountain gorillas should know that gorilla trekking can be easy or difficult and it can go up to full day. The dry season is the best season for gorilla tracking in Uganda when the terrains are dry? The dry season happens in the months of July to September and from December to February. During this season, the ground is dry making it easy for trekkers to hike through the dense forests and the steep slopes to search for mountain gorillas unlike the rainy season when there is too much rainfall making the ground muddy and slippery.

The wet season is also known as the low season and it happens in the months of March to May and October to November. The only advantage of tracking mountain gorillas in this season is that there is plenty of food that these gorillas feed on and visitors take a few hours to allocate them since they don’t move far distances to look for what to eat.

How to obtain a gorilla watching permit in advance enough

The reason of obtaining your gorilla permit in advance is that there is high demand of these permits in dry season and sometimes sell out. Your advised to purchase your gorilla permit 6 months before the final activity most especially if you want to trek mountain gorillas in high season of June to September and December to February. A Uganda gorilla permits costs $700, $600 and UGX 250,000 for foreign non – residents, foreign residents and east African citizens respectively.

For those who want gorilla habituation its $1500 for foreign non – residents, $1000 for foreign residents with a work permit of more than a year and Ugx750,000 for east African residents.
