Getting to Akagera national park for a game drive safari begins upon your arrival at Kigali international airport which is the major entry point into Rwanda. Many airlines fly in to Kigali international airport and these are KLM flights, Uganda airlines, delta flights, Brussels airlines, Turkish airlines, Qatar airways, Ethiopian airlines, united fights, Rwanda airlines, air Burundi and South African airways. Kigali international airport is located about 2.5 kilometers away from Kigali city and it serves as a starting point where visitors start their journeys from to Akagera national park.

You can get to this park using road transport, located in the north eastern side of Rwanda. The park is just 110 kilometers off Kigali International Park that is about 2.5 hours’ drive in a good and comfortable 4 wheel drive safari car. The park can also be accessed using helicopter flights from Kigali international airport to Akagera.

Akagera national park is the only park where you can do game drives in north eastern side of Rwanda just at the borders with Tanzania and it is the only savannah park in Rwanda.

Akagera national park is a home of the big five animals – African elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, lions and leopards as well as other wildlife such as  over 550 birds, cape eland, giraffes, zebras, hippos, kobs, crocodiles and many others.

The best way in getting to Akagera national park is by using a safari vehicle. The roads to northeastern Rwanda to the park are well constructed but you might find some bumpy spots on your way. You need to use a good and comfortable 4 wheel drive safari vehicle to enable you have the best trip in this park regardless of the season. Helicopters to Akagera national park take you only 25 minutes to reach the park.

Directions to Akagera national park

After landing at Kigali international airport, you can use a helicopter flight or a trusted tour operator with a driver guide of the company you booked with that will pick you up and you begin your journey to the park. From the airport to Kigali city about 100 meters you turn off from the west towards Rwamagana. From Rwamagana you drive Kayonza when you reach the roundabout, you turn on your right until you come across a Discentre station on the left side of the road as you Kabarondo town. When you reach the petrol station, drive on your left for like 15 minutes until you meet a junction at Rwinkwavu and there you will see a sign post of Akagera national park on your left. The gates of Akagera national park are 13 km away from the sign post. Yes, getting to this national park is the easiest way even on a self drive.
