Akagera National Park is found in the northeastern part of Rwanda in the districts of Kayonza and Nyagatare. Akagera National Park is the largest National Park in Rwanda with over 1,122 sq. km and it’s one of the oldest national parks in Africa gazette in 1934. The park was before 2500 sq. km but later was destroyed to create settlement for Rwanda refugees who had fled 1994 Rwanda genocide.

But following the creation of Akagera Management Company in 2010, much has been restored with reduced deforestation and animals such as lions, elephants and rhinos that had got extinct have now been already reintroduced back to Akagera National Park.

You can also watch hippos and crocodiles sun bathing near Lake Ihema, primates such as olive baboons, blue monkeys, bush babies, vervet monkeys among others.
