It Has Erupted 34 Times

It is not yet clear on how many times has the mountain erupted but since 1882, the mountain volcano is said to have erupted almost 34 times. This also comprises of the days when the eruption lasts for a long time in a year and commonly in a churning lava lake form in the crater.

Hard for Trekkers to Reach

The mountain is hidden in the depths and it is hard for hikers because they have to trek an altitude of around 11,400ft (3.47km) so as to reach the lava lake.

Mountain Nyiragongo always erupts around an average of every 30 years and is the most active volcano in the world.

Lava Shot Down the Mountain at 60miles in 1977

In year 1977, the walls of the lava lake were crushed down and the lava was drained in just less than an hour. It fell down about 60 miles per hour on the slopes of the volcano and disperse to the nearby villages hence killing 70 people.

Carbon Dioxide Toxicity which is locally known as Mazuku has led to the death of children even just recently. In the areas where this gas seeps from the ground, it has high levels and does not have the dispersing effects of wind and the effects are deadly.

2002 Eruption

After 6 months of the 2002 eruption, the volcano was recorded erupting again. The volcanic activity at the mountain goes a head but on the Crater Lake. Another crater lake was created just a few meters from the Crater Lake formed in 1994.
