What is the best time to hike Mountain Karisimbi in Rwanda? Karisimbi Mountain is the highest peak among the Virunga ranges with an elevation of 4,507 meters above sea level which makes it the 11th highest mountain in the whole of Africa. Mountain Karisimbi is a dormant volcano located on the borders of DR Congo and Rwanda about 29 km from Goma town.  The word Karisimbi means white shell in Kinyarwanda language and it’s named so because of the snow that is found on the top of Mountain Karisimbi in the drier months of June, July, August and September and again in December January and February.

Mountain Karisimbi has four vegetation zones with its exotic plants that can’t be found anywhere in the world. At the beginning of the mountain is dense forest and the summit is sterile. Mountain Karisimbi is a home of endangered mountain gorillas. Mountain Karisimbi is surrounded by some of the Virunga Mountains and these include Mountain Mikeno, Nyiragongo and Bisoke which offer you stunning views while at the top of the mountain.

You also see different bird species if you are a bird lover. Hiking to the top of mountain Karisimbi takes you about 8 and at the summit you have an overnight stay.

The accommodation on mountain Karisimbi is in form of cabins and it’s on 3700 meters above sea level with too much coldness so you should take as many warm clothes as you want to keep yourself warm. At the summit you will have amazing views with beautiful scenery of volcano ranges among which include Nyiragongo which is the largest lava in the world. You will also be able to see three countries with mountain gorillas and these are Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. At the cabin camp, you are served a cup of coffee as you listen to stories from the guide. In the morning after a cup of coffee you start to descend down the mountain and it takes you about 6 hours to reach the starting point. Travelers who hike mountain Karisimbi also participate in activities such as gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, birding, Iby’iwachu cultural visit, Musanze caves among others. Some also for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest, game drive in Akagera national park and primate watching in Giswati Mukura national park.

Hiking Mountain Karisimbi is done at any time of the year. However, the dry season is the best time to hike because there is less or no rain fall and the terrain is not slippery.  The dry months happen in the months of June to September and December to February.

What to pack to hike Mountain Karisimbi

Good hiking waterproof boots will help you pass through difficult ground because of the nature of the forest. Walking stick is very essential and needed for balancing the body during hiking. We also advise hikers to pack energy giving snacks, enough drinking water, enough clothes and a rain jacket.
