Animals in Murchison Falls National Park

Animals in Murchison falls national park. Also known as Kabalega national park,  Murchison falls national park was gazetted as a game reserve in 1962 and later as a national park in 1952, it  is the oldest and largest national park in Uganda followed by queen Elizabeth national park. The park is located in north western Uganda. The park has got over 451 birds and 76 mammals on an area of 3893 sq. kilometers in the districts of Bulisa, Kirandongo, Nyowa and Masindi

Big game animals.

Murchison falls national park is a home of 76 mammals species but has got four of the big animals though you can see all the five big animals if you visit Ziwa rhino sanctuary for white rhinos. The big animals at Murchison falls national park include the African elephant which is the largest animal in the world and the animals in the park are always scattered in the savannah woodland areas of the park. The park has also got herds of buffaloes easily seen during game drives in buligi plains, leopards spotted in shrubs and lions in the southern sector of Murchison falls national park. And lastly the Murchison falls national park has also got Rothschild’s endangered giraffes, other common animals in the park include Jackson’s hartebeest, warthogs, bush bucks, hippos and crocodiles among others.

Primates

Murchison falls National Park is not only a park for four big animals but also primates with olive baboons being spotted everywhere in the park, blue and red tailed monkeys and white colobus monkeys found in the forest, over 800 chimpanzees spotted in Kaniyo Pabidi forest in Budongo as well as nocturnal primates i.e. pottos, bush babies among others which are seen during night game drives and nature walks at kaniyo Pabidi forest in the park

Birds

Beside big animals and the primates, there are over 451 bird species in Murchison falls national park which hade the sky with beautiful colors. The birds are categorized into endemic birds, water birds, savannah birds, Albert Nile birds and the forest birds among others. Example of birds in Murchison falls national park include the shoebill stork, white thighed ground hornbill, goliath bird, African jacana, gonoleks, yellow foot kingfisher, piapiac, silver bird, speckle fronted weaver, giant kingfisher among others.
