5 Days Nyungwe Forest and mount Nyiragongo hike combine an adventure in both Rwanda the land of a thousand hills and democratic republic of Congo taking you to Nyungwe forest national park for a chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk and then proceed to lake Kivu in Gisenyi for relaxation at the beach and finally cross into Virunga national park DR Congo for an adventurous hike to summit the top of mount Nyiragongo. This safari starts and ends in Kigali city.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park

On your first day of Nyungwe forest and mount Nyiragongo hike, a driver guide from Africa adventure vacation will pick you up from your location in Kigali. You will be briefed about your safari and then you will start on your journey to Nyungwe forest national park which is famous for harboring 13 primates and the best canopy walk in east Africa. The journey to Nyungwe forest national park is very rewarding with lots of attractions for sighting among which include coffee plantations, local communities, rolling hills of Rwanda, and beautiful views of mount Nyiragongo all making your journey so rewarding. You will have an en-route lunch and proceed to the park and as soon as you reach the park, you will head out to your lodge and check-in, dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park

Wake up early in the morning for a morning breakfast, pack enough water for drinking and other necessities for chimpanzee tracking then meet your safari driver for a transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking, during the briefing you will be told about the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking after which you penetrate the forest to trek these primates. During chimpanzee trekking, you will come across other primates since the park harbors 13 of them, mammals, different bird species, butterflies, and thrilling vegetation cover. Finding these chimpanzees might take you 2 to 4 hours depending on their location after which you will be given a maximum of one hour to be in their presence, learning their behaviors, talking photos and videos as you watch them go about their daily activities. You will later get back to your lodge for lunch.

As soon as your done with lunch, you will get back to the briefing center for a briefing about the canopy walk in the forest. The walk starts at Uwinka and stretches to about 150 meters long and it’s built 50 meters above the ground. During the canopy walk, you will have an aerial view of the national park, the forest, you will spot some primates, mammals, and different bird species. After the canopy walk, you will return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Gisenyi for Boat cruise on Lake Kivu

You will have a relaxed breakfast on your 3rd day of 5 days Nyungwe forest and mount Nyiragongo hike, check out of the lodge, and begin your journey to Gisenyi where you will reach in time for lunch. You will check in to have lunch and you will spend the rest of the day at the beach on leisure. While at the beach you can take part in several activities such as a boat cruise on Lake Kivu, sports, walking safari and much more that will make your safari memorable. You will get back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Drive to Goma city and hike mount Nyiragingo in Virunga national park

On this day you need to wake up early in the morning for breakfast, get your lunch box, drinking water, and other things and then met your driver guide to transfer you to Goma via the Grande barrier border where you will be cleared for a visa and a hiking permit and later on join the convoy to be transferred to Kibati ranger post to join other hikers for briefing. After the briefing, the hike starts with hikers guarded by armed rangers to hike up mount Nyiragongo. Just like any other mountain, hiking up mountain Nyiragongo is a bit tiresome and staring but rewarding. By the time you get to the top, you will forget all the difficulties and instead enjoy the stunning view of the boiling lava lake at the summit of Nyiragongo and other neighboring volcanoes. You will spend an overnight at the top of the mountain overlooking Goma city and the lava lake that brightens most especially when if it rains in the night enabling you to capture beautiful pictures.

Day 5: Descend mount Nyiragongo and return to Kigali for a city tour

Arise at the top of mount Nyiragongo on your last day of 5 days Nyungwe forest and mount Nyiragongo hike and start your hike down the mountain where you will be picked by your driver-guide and driven back to Kigali city with an en-route lunch. On reaching Kigali city you will have a Kigali city tour where you will visit local markets like Kirimonko, art galleries, and the Kigali genocide memorial site where dozens of people that died in the 1994 Rwanda genocide are buried. You will then be dropped at your hotel or Kigali international airport to end your 5 Days Nyungwe forest and Mount Nyiragongo hike Safari.
