Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up and transfer from Kigali to Akagera national park.

Depending on your location in Kigali, our driver-guide will be ready to transfer you to Akagera national park. The journey from Kigali national park to Akagera national park is about 2 – 3 hours and upon arrival, you will continue to check in your lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will go for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema that will reward you with lots of flora and fauna species including elephants and buffaloes that come along the lake shores to drink water or bath. You will also see water animals like crocodiles and Hippos not forgetting water birds like the African fish eagle and shoebill among others. After a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, you will return to your lodge with an evening game drive to spot some mammas. You will get back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Morning game drive in Akagera national park and transfer back to Kigali

After early morning breakfast on your day 2 of 4 days Rwanda double gorilla trekking and wildlife safari, you will meet your driver-guide and head out for an early morning game drive in Akagera national park to encounter different species of animals such as lions, buffaloes, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, antelopes, birds, butterflies a d stunning vegetation cover. Later in the day you will return to your lodge for lunch and check out for a drive back to Kigali for an amazing Kigali city tour exploring the beauty of the cleanest city in East Africa.

You will be able to explore the Kigali genocide memorial site which was put in place to remember the Rwanda genocide of 1994, art galleries, gift shops, Kimironko market, shopping malls, and many more. Drive to your lodge in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer from Kigali city to volcanoes national park for first gorilla trek

On this day you will wake up as early as possible for your morning breakfast and by 5:30 am, you will set off for a 2 – 3 hours’ drive from Kigali city to volcanoes national park in the northwest of Rwanda in Ruhengeri. You will have a stopover at Kinigi which is volcanoes national park headquarters for your gorilla trekking permits and join the rest of the members for a briefing from the park rangers. During the briefing, you will get to learn the rules and regulations to follow during gorilla trekking. You will be grouped into a maximum of 8 people and each group will be given a guide to lead them into the forest in search of mountain gorillas. While searching for mountain gorillas, you will come across different animals like forest elephants, baboons, warthogs, golden monkeys, different bird species, and much more. The whole trek lasts 30 minutes to several hours depending on the location of mountain gorillas and the movement speed of trekkers. After finding the mountain gorilla family, you will be given an hour to spend with it learning about the gorilla behaviors, watching them do their daily activities as you take photos and record videos for memories. You wilt trek back to the headquarters to get your gorilla trekking certificate after which drive back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you can opt to visit the Iby’iwacu cultural village, walk to win lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, or spend time at the lodge relaxing.

Day 4: Second gorilla trekking in volcanoes national park and departures

After early morning breakfast on the last day of your safari, you will return to the park headquarters for a pre-briefing about gorilla trekking like on the previous day. On this day inform the park rangers to give you a different gorilla family otherwise you might end up trekking the same gorilla family you trekked previously. After briefing a ranger guide will lead you into the jungle of volcanoes national park to search for the allocated mountain gorilla family. You will spend another hour with mountain gorillas and later return to your lodge for lunch. in the afternoon you will check out of the lodge and meet your driver for your 2 – 3 hours journey from volcanoes national park to Kigali.
