Why Visit Mount Elgon National Park? Mount Elgon is among the famous national parks in Africa. Mount Elgon national park in Uganda is among the largest volcanic base in the entire world at 4,000km2.  Mountain Elgon National Park is situated in Uganda on the border of Kenya and it is the largest and oldest volcanic mountain in East Africa. It has 80 km in diameter and stretches more than 3,000m above the surrounding plains.  Also has higher altitudes which providing a refuge for fauna and flora. It was made up of lava debris below out from a gently enlarged volcanic vent during the Pliocene epoch and rise to a high of about 4320m above sea level.

Jackson’s Pool is a natural pool with shallow waters that stands at 4,050m. This pool is in the shadow of the 4,165m high Jackson’s Peak, a free-standing volcanic plug mounting from the western flank of the mountain.

The Western and Northern parts of Mt Elgon are in series of massive basalt cliffs often many kilometers in length, of which the mount river falls as beautiful waterfalls. 3 common known mount waterfalls are Sipi falls on the Kapchorwa road just outside the park the lowest of these falls is the most spectacular as it flows over 100m around the entrance to a cave visitor can stand and enjoy a view of the back of the falls. The third waterfall is Ngasire gushes over an 87m high ridge.

Mount Elgon is the largest base area of any free-standing volcano in the world and it is the 8th highest mountain in whole Africa.  The savannah elephants that is Loxodonta Africana are also spotted around mountain Elgon. , not the forest elephants of West and Central Africa.

The cave-in Mount Elgon also visited by elephants is “Kitum” a Masai word meaning “place of ceremonies” and it expands for about 160 meters in the mountain. It also has amazing elephants. Elgon is also natural habitat to giant forest hogs, colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, leopards, bushbucks, elands, golden cats, buffalo, duikers, and unique hot springs within her crater, Elgon is a good place for great Africa tour destination trekking in Mount Elgon National Park Uganda.

The Caldera was made as a result of magma being drained after the chamber. When it could no longer support the overlying volcanic cone, it misshapen into a depression-like shape. In the Eastern corner of the caldera, hot springs are found.  In the Northwest, Simu Gorge was formed by the sheer weight of the water in the caldera passing through 2 stream beds out of the weak volcanic ash and agglomerate walls. The caldera – Elgon’s is among the largest intact calderas worldwide.

After visiting mountain Elgon national park, you can also visit Bwindi impenetrable national park for gorilla trekking and get an opportunity to explore more about these primates. You can visit Murchison falls national park and take a boat cruise on the river Nile where you will see various aquatic animals like hippos, crocodiles and many more or you can do a game drive and view many wildlife animals such as buffaloes, giraffes,  Uganda kob, hippos plus countless bird species.
