Bwindi impenetrable forest national park

Protecting endangered mountain gorillas, the Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda. The Park is home to the highest number of mountain gorillas living in 20 habituated gorilla families. Gorilla trekking is the main activity done in this park which has 4 trekking sectors namely- Nkuringo, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Buhoma. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is home to 120 mammal species, 351 bird species, 11 primates, and 220 species of butterflies and so much more.

Queen Elizabeth national park

Covering a total area of 1978 sq km, queen Elizabeth national park is located in the western part of Uganda. Named after Queen Elizabeth of England, it’s the most visited national park in the country protecting the highest number of animals. Queen Elizabeth national park is a home of over 95 mammals including 4 of the big 5 – lion, leopard, buffalo, and elephants, over 500 bird species, and 10 primates.

Murchison falls national park

Gazetted in 1926, Murchison falls national park is the oldest and largest national park in Uganda located on the shores of Albert Nile in the northwestern part of Uganda. The Park harbors over 17 mammals with the big 5- lions, elephants, buffalo and leopards, 451 bird species, and the Murchison falls which happen to be the strongest in the world.

Kibale forest national park

Seated on a 975 sq. km piece of land, Kibale forest national park is located in the western part of the country. The Park is famous for hosting the highest population of chimpanzees in Africa which are over 1500 finding a home in its lowland and montane forests. Kibale forest national park is home to 13 primate species, 70 mammal species, and over 375 birds.

Lake Mburo national park

Lake Mburo national park is situated on the highway connecting Kampala city to the western part of Uganda. The Park is Uganda’s smallest savannah park but has over 13 small lakes, 350 bird species as well as 68 mammals among which include a lion, leopards, hyenas, reedbucks, topis, Defassa waterbucks, buffaloes, oribis, elands, impalas, and the highest population of zebras.

Mgahinga gorilla park

Mgahinga national park is one of the luckiest national parks in Africa to host endangered mountain gorillas. the park is located in southwestern Uganda in the Kisoro district. Mgahinga national park has only one gorilla family Nyakagezi that is open for trekking at any time of the year. The Park is also the only one that harbors the rare golden monkeys alongside 76 mammals, and 184 bird species.

Kidepo valley national park

Kidepo valley national park is one of the less-visited national parks in Uganda located in the remote areas of northeastern parts of the country. The Park was gazette in 1962 and is home to over 77 mammal species, 470 bird species among which include the ostrich.

Gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is only done in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla park both located in south western Uganda. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park harbors the largest population of mountain gorillas and has over 20 habituated gorilla families that are spread in 4 sectors of the park – Nkuringo, Ruhija, Rushaga and Buhoma. The other national park in Uganda where gorilla trekking is done is Mgahinga gorilla park and this has only one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi.

Price of gorilla trekking in Uganda; Mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda costs $700 for foreign nonresidents, $600 foreign residents and UGX250,000 east African citizens. The permits can be obtained from a trusted tour operator or Uganda tourism board. You are advised to book your gorilla trekking permit in advance of 3-4 months to avoid inconvenience. The permits are sole to children ages 15 and above.

Chimpanzee trekking

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is done in several places such as Kibale forest national park, Kalinzu forest, Budongo forest, Toro Semuliki wildlife reserve, Ngamba island sanctuary, and Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park. Of all the above places, Kibale national parks host the largest population of tourists annually because it’s home to the highest population of chimpanzees in Africa surviving in the lowland and montane forests of the park. Kibale forest national park is also famous for hosting the other 12 primate species namely olive baboons, vervet monkeys, grey checked mangabeys, black and white colobus, Uganda mangabey, pottos, patas monkeys, L’hoests monkeys, blue monkeys, and Demidoff Galago.

Price of chimpanzee trekking in Uganda; Each place has its own prices for chimpanzee trekking and for the case of Kibale forest national park it’s $200 for foreign nonresidents, $150 for foreign residents and east African citizens pay UGX150,000. Toro Semuliki wildlife reserve its $30 foreign nonresidents and foreign residents while East African citizens pay UGX20,000.  Lastly, Kyambura gorge permits are sold at $30 for both foreign and non-foreign residents while East African citizens pay UGX30,000

Golden monkey trekking

Golden monkeys are beautiful species of primates found on the slopes of the Virunga mountains which are shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. In Uganda, golden monkey trekking can only be done in Mgahinga national park which is located in the southwestern part of the country. Gorilla monkey trekking starts in the morning with the briefing at the park headquarters where the people are taught about the rules and regulations of the activity. After the briefing, the trekkers grouped into 8 are led by the guide to the forest in search of these beautiful unique primates. the trekking takes 2-3 hours but when you finally locate the golden monkeys, you are given a period of 1 hour to be around them learning about their behaviors and taking pictures.

Game viewing

Game drives in Uganda are mainly done in Queen Elizabeth national park, Kidepo valley national park, Lake Mburo national park, and Murchison falls national park.  During the game drives in the above national park, there are opportunities for animals such as lions, leopards, giraffes, eland, oribis, topis, elephants, Uganda kob, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, cheetahs, hyena, hippos, rhinos, and many others.

Best time for a Uganda tailor-made trips

Uganda can be visited at any time of the year but the dry season is better than the rainy season. The dry season in Uganda happens from June to September and December to February.
