The size of Rwenzori mountains- Yes, Rwenzori mountain national park covers an area of about 996kilometers and it stretches about 120km on the border of Congo.  The national park was established in 1991 and renowned as a World Heritage site in 1994 and Ramsar site in 2008. The highest peak stands at an elevation of 5,109 meters above sea level on Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak.

The Rwenzori Mountains are not among the volcanic mountains like other highest peaks in Africa but are a block of rock formed through the floor of the Western Rift Valley. The Rwenzoris also known as Mountains of the Moon and this was named by an explorer called Alexandrine geographer Ptolemy in AD 150.

In 1888 on 24th May, an explorer Henry Stanley placed the size of Rwenzori. And he labeled it as ‘Ruwenzori’, a local name which he recorded as meaning “Cloud-King” or “Rain-Maker.”

The first person to reach the highest peak was Ms. Beryl Park in 2010 according to records. The Rwenzoris is also known as the Mountains of the Moon found in western parts of Uganda on the border of Congo and Uganda. Its highest peak which known as Margarita is also the 3rd highest point in Africa, with the lower slopes are covered in moorland, bamboo forests, and montane forest. Giant tree-heathers and colorful mosses are found in the mountainside with huge lobelias as well as flowers creating fascinating, fairy tale views

Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers an area of about 120 kilometers long and 65 kilometers wide and the Park hosts over 70 mammals plus 217 bird species including 19 Albertine Rift endemics and some of the rarest plants not only in Africa but worldwide that is senecio and lobelis.

It can be accessed from Kampala the capital city of Uganda via Fort Portal which is about 375kilometers and will take you through to the park’s trailhead to Ruboni.  Or you may use the southern route via Mbarara and Queen Elizabeth which takes 450kilometers to Ruboni.  Nyakalengija is 25kilometers north of the town of Kasese and 17kilometers off the road of Kasese to Fort Portal.
