Maramagambo forest covers some part of Queen Elizabeth national park from Kichwamba escarpment all through Lake Edward. Maramagambo is good for tourism activities i.e. hiking, nature walks through trails. Maramagambo forest is located in Bushenyi district, the word Maramagambo is derived from a traditional tale in which a group of young people got lost in the forest and it took a lot of days to trace them from their path back to their local villages, however on their way back home these children couldn’t speak for long hence the word Maramagambo meaning the end of words.

The forest is an ideal destination for hiking and nature walks which can take one to two hours and this half-day activity offers you a chance to explore stunning water lakes. Maramagambo forest has so many different primates that you can spot during nature walks among which include chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, L’hoest’s monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys among others. The forest is also home to nocturnal animals’ i.e. pottos and bush babies and is also famous because of bat caves. The forest is bordered by two crater lakes namely lake Kyasanduka and lake Nyamasingiri.

During the hike through the forest, you will get a chance to see primates i.e. olive baboons, chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys among others. You will also spot several bird species in the forest such as Rwenzori turaco, white napped pigeons, and flycatchers, etc. which are uncommon. There are also chimpanzees in Maramagambo forest which will catch your mind to tracking the endangered animals and learn about their behavior.

Activities you can enjoy in the Maramagambo forest

Chimpanzee tracking: Apart from Kyambura gorge chimpanzee trekking activity can also be done in Maramagambo forest though not widely recognized by the tourists.

Bird watching: Maramagambo forest is a habitat of so many unique bird species such as bar-tailed godwit, raptors, Martial eagle, African jacana, grey crowned crane, and white napped pigeon among others.

Guided nature walks and hiking: The forest offers the best hiking because of the open savannah here you will spot many bird species, animals such as lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, antelopes, leopards, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, chimpanzees among others.

How to get to Maramagambo forest

The forest can be accessed by air or road transport, the visitors who want to use chatter will board charter flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi airfield to Mweya airstrip.

By road transport the closest route would be Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara-Bushenyi-queen Elizabeth national park and the other route is Kampala Mubende- fort portal- Kasese and then link to Bushenyi route then to Queen Elizabeth national park.

There are other activities in Maramagambo forest such as Forest trail, river trail which involves walking along river Kajojo, palm trail where you get to see different tree species i.e. frame tree and Raphia palms, valley trail and water fall trail at Kilyantama falls as well as forest research and conservation education
