How to get to Mabira Central Forest Reserve: As earlier mentioned Mabira forest is located along Jinja-Kampala high way in Buikwe district Uganda. The forest is approximately 56 kilometers east of the capital city Kampala and covers a total area of about 306 square kilometers which is believed to have extended from Central African rain forests. Mabira Central Forest Reserve is home to several plants and animal species and this has made the forest an important tourist attraction to both domestic and international travelers.

Mabira Central Forest Reserve can be accessed from Kampala in just about forty-five minutes. It’s about 56 kilometers from Kampala and 20 kilometers from Jinja City. The headquarters of the forest area is located at Najjembe village which is 500 meters from the highway. Travelers can use a taxis from Kampala to Jinja or buses which operate 24hours.  Alternatively, you can arrange a private transport means or hire a safari vehicle with appropriate guidance from the experienced travel operator.

With traffic, the journey can take up to two hours. Those coming from Jinja can board a taxi heading to Lugazi and stop at the famous Najjembe market. The center of the forest is around this market.

Mabira Central forest is open to visitors throughout the year. However, some activities are more suitable during certain periods of the year. Camping and picnics are better between in the dry season (December and February). Camping during the rainy season is possible but the weather can be very unpredictable.

Regardless of which activity you plan on doing, endeavor to come prepared. A packing list for Mabira forest would include things like a camera, raincoat, a hut, hiking boots, binocular and insect repellents
