How to book a Chimpanzee trekking permit for Giswhati-Mukura National park in Rwanda? This is the latest and newest park to be added to Rwanda’s list of National parks with a number of ctivities. The park was created after two forests of Mukura forest and Gishwati Forest was combined or merged in the year 2015. Gishwati-Mukura national park covers an area of 34 square kilometers and this makes it the smallest national park in Rwanda and probably the listed visited national park in the country. The park is situated along the Albertine Rift and the ridge separating Congo and the Nile water catchment area.
Despite its small size, Gishwati-Mukura national park harbors various primate species, reptiles, bird species, and tree species making it so interesting for the visitors not to miss out on visiting this wonderful national park. The park is the home to the Eastern endangered chimpanzees and these chimpanzees have made this park famous despite its latest formation. These chimpanzees exist in the forest with L-Hoest monkeys, golden monkeys, and blue monkeys. A park from primates, the park has recorded over 233 bird species some of which can be only found in the Albertine Rift. The presence of such birds makes it a unique birding destination in Rwanda. It was a wise decision to gazette this area as the national park since most of the area was resettled and cleared by the people for livestock keeping and agriculture. The declaration of Gishwati-Mukura Forest as a National park since 2015 has seen the conservation efforts uplifted and make the ecosystem at its best.

Gishwati-Mukura National is open for visitation throughout the year and therefore you can visit the park for chimpanzee trekking but the dry season is the best season for gorilla trekking especially in February, May, June, July, August, Early September, and December. It is important to note that the rainy season is also best and increases food availability all over the park and this makes chimpanzees available to most parts of the park which makes visibility easy for visitors.
