Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is the most attractive park for hiking and mountain gorilla trekking is one of its activity which makes popular in the entire world. Bwindi is located in the south west parts of Uganda and it lies on 331 sq. kilometers, it is under a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The park is a home of the highest population number of mountain gorilla’s habituated thus providing wonderful mountain gorilla trekking experience. The park has got other attractions within like 310  beautiful butterfly species, 10 primate species including L’Hoests, chimpanzees, Black and white colobus monkey, Red tailed and Blue monkey, Olive baboons, 350 bird species that include Bar tailed trogon, short tailed warbler, dusky crimson wing, , Rusty faced woodland warbler, Kivu ground thrust, Grauer’s rush warbler, White tailed blue monarch, Yellow eyed black fly catcher and more so, Mammals like bush pig, forest elephants, giant forest hog, Duikers, cats  plus Beautiful vegetation cover which helps the park to be ranked as ecological rich tropical rainforest and one of oldest forest most filled with flowering plants, ferns and a variety of shrub and tree species

Munyanga River hiking trail            

Munyanga River trail is the easiest and most remarkable trail in Bwindi forest. The trail allows you a chance to watch primates and birds. Munyanga River trail is expected to be completed in 2 hours and hiking all starts from endpoint of Buhoma road through Bizinge creek that connects to the bank of river Munyaga and the small waterfalls. Green vegetation are also there including orchids,  tree ferns, epithetic, bird species and colorful butterflies and primates like chimpanzees, mountain gorillas.

Waterfall hiking Trails                                                              

Waterfall Trails was established in 1970 and the main purpose was to connect to Kisoro town and for sure it was a success. Waterfall Trails take almost 3-4 hours to be completed and the trail leads you to brilliant waterfall. The trail is hiked and is located in Rushaga region of Bwindi. Munyaga River thrice crossing deep in thick forests to 3 adjoin waterfalls. On this waterfall trail, you will explore the green vegetation, waterfalls and bird species.

Rusizi River hiking trail

Rusizi River trail is a trail to check for if you are a bird watcher. The trail takes you through the rugged centre of the park and therefore you are recommended to use a 4×4 car while crossing. As you are hiking here, you will spot duikers, bird species and primates plus 3 hours that are required to complete hiking to Mubwindi swamp.

Rushura hiking trail

Rushura trail is a thrilling trail that takes travelers through thick forest trees and offers visitors spectacular views of the western rift valley floor. For this trail, it takes only 3 hours to be completed and it leads to the highest point of Rushura hill which is on an altitude of 6,289 feet. When hiking through Rushura trail, you will pass through thick forest, mountain, peaks of Virunga volcanoes and Rwenzori Mountains, terraced field, Lake Rwanda.

Muzabajiro hiking trail

Muzabajiro trail is a thrilling trail too that offers magnificent view of Bwindi Park, Virunga Mountains and western rift valley. This trail is a moderate one for hiking through canopy forest heading to Ruhubira Hill. While hiking you will breath take fresh air and also view the park.

Bamboo hiking trail

Bamboo trail is found at an elevation of 2,607m above sea level at Rwamunyo forest thus being found at the highest point of the park. While hiking here, it will take you only 6 hours and the trail will take you through vegetation like Alpline vegetation, bamboo forest, and afro montane as your heading to Rwamunyonyi peak. On this very trail, you will sight Lake Bunyonyi which is famous for being a home of bird species and as you descend on this trail, you will meet Mubwindi swamp where you find localized and endemic African broad bill.

Kashasha River hiking trail

Kashasha River trail is completed within 5-6 hours and the trail begins from Buhoma sector to Nkuringo sector. The trail altitude is 600m above the sea level. This trail takes travelers through steep terrain, through community land and to the park’s buffer zone. The trail crosses two rivers amid the forest. Also the trail helps to hike towards the parks headquarters in Buhoma sector where it only takes a traveler five hours to reach the park.

River Ivi hiking trail

River Ivy trail is just 14km and at same time is taken to be a moderate trail in Buhoma sector of Bwindi Park. The trail goes through the southern parts of Bwindi leading you to Mukempunu a well-known place for large wild pigs. Hiking at River Ivi is done at Buhoma or Nkuringo sector. Hiking on this trail takes you 6hours and you will have a chance to spot bird species, beautiful butterflies and primates like white and black colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, duikers and many more. You will also meet locals who are going to their gardens and markets using the same route.

Habinyanja hiking trail

Habinyanja trail takes 4-6 hours to be completed. The trail crosses over Munyanga River heading to steep slopes of Riyovi ridges and Habigorogoro. When you are at the top of this ridges, you will see Buhoma River and when you are ascending on this trail, you head to Habinyanja swamp where you will spot various bird species. This trail is also good for bird watchers because you will see, black beef eaters, African black duck and Pel’s fishing owl.

Getting to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for hiking experiences.     

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is reached well on both air and road means of transport. The park is 530 km from Kampala when you use road and you can follow these routes below to explore hiking in Bwindi forest experiences;

Kampala-Kibale-Kanungu-Buhoma is a 6-7 hours’ drive

Kampala-Kabale-Nkuringo is a 7-9 hours ‘drive

Kampala-Ntungamo-Rukungiri-Kihihi-Buhoma route a 6hours’ drive.

When you wish to use air transport, a chartered flight is organized from or kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe international airport to Kihihi airstrip and Kayonza airstrip which are found in Northern sector and Nyakabande airstrip in Kisoro which is in the southern region of the park.
