Gorilla trekking Sectors in Bwindi Forest National Park Uganda

Bwindi has 4 sectors where you can do gorilla trekking and these include Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Nkuringo and Rushaga in the south.

This article is focusing mainly on gorilla trekking regions / sectors of Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is located in south western Uganda and is famous for hosting more than half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the entire world. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is among the best destinations to trek mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park gorilla trekking regions

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park has 4 regions where you can do gorilla trekking and these include Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Nkuringo and Rushaga in the south. Every sector has a number of habituated gorilla families open for gorilla trekking.

This area of the world’s tropical rainforest, Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is situated in south western part of Uganda near the border of DR Congo, Rwanda and next to Virunga national park. The park covers a total area of 331 square kilometers of both montane and lowland forest.

The park is a UNESCO heritage site described as the mountain gorilla’s haven with unique bio diverse and mountainous landscape featuring over 350 bird species, 120 mammal species, 220 species of butterflies, frogs, chameleons and many others.

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is famous for hosting over half of the world’s total population of mountain gorillas remaining in the world. The mountain gorillas feed mostly on vegetation, roots, leaves, fruits and small mammals

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park has 19 habituated gorillas families open to visitors for gorilla trekking in 4 different gorilla tracking sectors all managed by Uganda wildlife authority

Buhoma region.

This is the most famous region and recommended for travelers looking for a satisfying gorilla safari in Uganda. The region was the first gorilla trekking region to host the first group of trekkers. The sector from there has been the most famous region for trekking mountain gorillas in Uganda. It is situated in the north of the park with 5 habituated gorilla families that can be trekked by tourists and these are Mubare gorilla family, Rushegura gorilla family, Muyambi gorilla family, Katwe gorilla family and Habinyanja gorilla family.

It’s always easy to connect from Queen Elizabeth national park to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and the park has a wide range of accommodation facilities from luxury to mid-range to budget and these have made Buhoma sector the best gorilla region in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park

Ruhija region.

This sis also among the 4 gorilla tracking regions in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, located in eastern part near Kabale district. The park has 3 habituated gorilla families that are visited daily by the tourists. The gorilla families are Oruzongo gorilla family, Kyaguriro gorilla family and Bitukura gorilla family. Ruhija is located between Buhoma and Kabale which makes it easy to be accessed from both sides of south and north. For one to trek gorilla in Rushija sector, they can stay in Buhoma, Ruhija or even Kabale town and still make it to the starting point in the morning on time.

Ruhija sector is the second most preferred region after Buhoma sector. The sector is used by tourists who don’t have enough time on their schedule and would love to find gorillas so fast in the forest. Mountain gorillas in Ruhija sector are found so fast that’s why tourists who do gorilla trekking in this sector come very fast.

Rushaga region.

This is located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. The region has 8 habituated gorilla families meaning that it’s the region with the highest number of gorilla families in the park.  The gorilla families are Bweza, Kahungye, Busingye, Mishaya, Rwigi, Nsongi and Mucunguzi.

The region being with the highest number of gorilla families has potential of attracting more trekkers and take over other regions.

Nkuringo region.

For strenuous adventures, the best region for gorilla trekking is Nkuringo region. It’s situated in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and has 3 gorilla families namely Nkuringo, Bishasho and Christmas.

Note that you must possess a valid gorilla permit in order for you to take part in the trekking activity. The gorilla permit indicates the sector you are interested in trekking. So trekkers who want specific regions, its better you inform Africa Adventure Vacations in time for reservations.

When you visit Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, you can combine gorilla tracking with bird watching, Batwa experience and nature walks that expose you to animals such as elephants, monkeys, chimpanzees and many others.
