Gorilla families in Buhoma Sector Bwindi impenetrable forest national park: This sector is located in Kanungu district in northern parts of the park. Buhoma sector is the easiest sector for gorilla trekking, Buhoma sector was the first sector with habituated gorilla family in Bwindi and that family is known as Mubare gorilla family.

Buhoma sector has the following Gorilla families;

Mubare gorilla family.      

Mubare gorilla group is the one of the first and oldest family in Buhoma sector to be habituated and it is mostly known as the interesting family with 9 members. That is, 1 silver back is the head of the group, 4 adult females, 2 infants and 2 black backs. This is headed by dominant Alpha Ruhondeza.  Mubare family was first habituated in 1991 and in 1993 first tourists started trekking this family.

Rushegura gorilla family

Rushegura gorilla family is found in Buhoma sector and it has 15 gorilla members under the leadership of dominant Alpha kabukojo. Within this group, there are 3 juveniles, 4 adult females, 4 blackback and 4 infants. Rushegura was first habituated in year 2000 and in 2002 first visitor to trek and later they split from Habinyanja gorilla family and it takes about 3-5 hours to trek this area.

Habinyanja gorilla family      

This gorilla family has 17 amazing members who compris of 1 silverback, mubare gorilla family which is led by dominant Alpha Makara, the name Habinyanja gorilla family originated from local name Nyanja which also means water in English language. This refers to a place where the members were first sighted during habituation process which started in 1997 and closed in 1999.  Trekking here takes 5hours a day.

Buhoma sector has accommodation facilities like buhoma lodge, Bwindi view bandas, Bwindi guest house, luxury buhoma lodge, top notch gorilla forest camp, buhoma community rest camp and silverback lodge.

How to get to Buhoma sector

Buhoma sector is accessed by both use of air or road transport. Buhoma sector is in an estimated distance of 95 kilometers from Kampala and when you use road transport, it will take you only 3-4 hours’ drive as you use the Kampala-masaka-mbarara-ntugamo-rukungiri-buhoma highway. When you wish to use air means of transport, a chattered domestic flight is arranged from Entebbe international airstrip OR kajjansi airstrip and it lands you to Kihihi airstrip. You can also reach Buhoma sector when you are from Kabale town which is a 2 hour drive and also from Ishasha southern sector of Queen Elizabeth national park and it is only for four hours’ drive.
