This 6 days Rwanda wildlife and gorilla safari will give you two safari experiences e.g. gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park and Akagera national park. Volcanoes national park is the only place in Rwanda hosting mountain gorillas. Akagera national park is the only savannah park in Rwanda hosting several big mammals including the big five – leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino, and lion as well as several antelopes, zebras, and giraffes.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali for the 6 days Rwanda wildlife and gorilla safari

On this day you begin your exciting experience touring Rwanda on this wildlife and gorilla safari. Africa adventure safari driver will pick you up from your residence or Kigali international airport on your arrival. You will be taken to your hotel for check-in as you wait for the Kigali city tour the following day.

Day 2: Kigali city tour and transfer to Akagera national park

After your morning breakfast, we shall take you for a Kigali city tour and take a visit to some areas such as the Kigali genocide memorial, craft centers, markets, Kandt national museum among others. You can choose the places you want because in the afternoon after lunch we shall be starting our journey to Akagera national park.

In the afternoon we shall start our journey to Akagera national park which takes us about 2 hours. Akagera national park is the only savannah park in Rwanda located on the eastern side of the country. Upon arriving at the park, we shall continue to our lodge and check-in, relax, have dinner as we wait for wildlife viewing the next day.

Day 3: Exploring wildlife in Akagera national park

You wake up early and take your morning breakfast after which head out to explore Akagera national park in search of wildlife among which include mammals such as giraffes, lions, rhinos, buffaloes, impalas, elephants, topis, cape elands, hyenas, bushbucks, oribis, duikers, roan antelope and kingfisher among others. The game drive will be done on the northern side of the park because this is where the largest population of wildlife is. For bird lovers, the park is a home of over 525 different bird species among which include grey crowned crane, African jacana, shoebill stork, African fish eagle to mention but a few. After the game drive, you will return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation

In the afternoon, you have an opportunity of going for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema which is the largest lake in Akagera national park. On Lake Ihema you will see hippos and crocodiles in the water, elephants on the lake shoes and some water birds.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes national park

After early morning breakfast, we start on our journey to Volcanoes national park where the endangered mountain gorillas inhabit. It’s a natural home for mountain gorillas providing a perfect environment and what to eat for gorillas. Volcanoes national park is situated in the northern part of Rwanda in Kinigi, Musanze about 2 – 3 hours from Kigali. Driving from Akagera national park to Volcanoes national park takes you through Kigali city, several villages with rolling hills. You will have lunch at any of the towns. You can request your driver to always stop at different viewpoints for pictures as you have beautiful views of endless rolling hills and get to understand why Rwanda is called “The land of a thousand hills”. you shall arrive at your booked lodge later that evening for dinner and an overnight stay while preparing for gorilla trekking the next day.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park will be the most exciting highlight on this 6 days Rwanda wildlife and gorilla safari. After a beautiful night and an early morning breakfast, our driver guide will transfer you to the briefing center to have a briefing with the park rangers. The park rangers will guide you on how to behave when you meet these giant apes. Depending on the number of trackers, you will be divided into groups with the maximum number being 8. After the briefing, you will be enjoying entertainment from the Rwanda cultural dances while enjoying fresh brewed Rwanda coffee. After the briefing, you will start on your journey to the forest to search for these primates. Trekking in Volcanoes national park takes 1 hour to several hours depending on where the gorillas slept the previous night, the nature of the terrain as well as the speed at which you are trekking. Enjoying gorilla trekking requires one to be physically fit. After locating mountain gorillas, you are given a maximum of 1 hour to be around these apes while observing their behaviors, watching them patrol, hunt, mothers breastfeed, young ones play and others make nests sleep on during the night.

Day 6: Departure

Best time to visit Rwanda for 6 Days Wildlife And Gorilla Safari

Although visiting Rwanda for mountain gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year, the best time for mountain gorilla trekking is the dry season that happens from June to September and from December to February. During this season there is less rainfall with trails dry and passable.
