6 days Rwanda gorilla trekking and Dian Fossey safari takes you to visit the most stunning destination in Rwanda. The safari will take you to the wilderness of volcanoes national park to spend one hour with rare mountain gorillas, Iby’Iwacu village, and hike to Dian Fossey then connect to Lake Kivu for a full-day adventure at the lake before connecting to Nyungwe forest national park for chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk. Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to volcanoes national park

On the first day of your 6 days Rwanda gorilla trekking and Dian Fossey safari, your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or Kigali international airport and brief you about your tour. You will then go for the Kigali city tour where you will visit places like Kirimonko market, art galleries, the Kigali genocide memorials, and other attractions. After the Kigali city tour, you will get some lunch and start on your journey to the volcanoes national park located in the northwest of Rwanda in Ruhengeri. You will have a stopover at Kinigi headquarters to pick your gorilla trekking permit then proceed to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and visit Iby’Iwacu cultural village

After early morning breakfast on the second day of your safari, pack all that you need for gorilla trekking then meet your driver-guide ready to transfer you to Kinigi headquarters for briefing. During the briefing, you will be told the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. You will be given a gorilla family to trek after which be grouped into 8 people. You will be given a ranger guide who will lead you into the forest in search of habituated mountain gorillas. The trek in volcanoes national park takes you about 30 mins to 7 hours depending on their location and the speed you are trekking. Once you find the gorilla family you are given one hour which is the maximum time allowed for you to spend with endangered mountain gorillas. After an hour with mountain gorillas, you will trek back to the starting point and meet your driver who will take you to the headquarters to get your trekking certificate before going to your lodge for lunch.

After enjoying your lunch, you will have some relaxation then start on your journey to visit the Iby’Iwacu cultural village to enjoy the best cultural experience about the Rwanda culture. You will be entertained with thrilling dance and drama, learn about how they make banana juice, see how the locals go about their daily activities. After the cultural visit, you will return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Hike Dian Fossey tomb and transfer to Gisenyi

After morning breakfast, you will go for a briefing about the Dian Fossey hike at the park headquarters. You will then be led by a ranger guide who will take you to Karisoke research center where Dian Fossey an American primatologist was buried after her murder on 26th December 1985. She was buried at the gorilla cemetery next to her favorite gorilla Digit. After visiting the Dian Fossey hike you will descend back and head to your lodge for lunch.

After having lunch, you will check out of your lodge and drive to Gisenyi where you will visit several genocide memorial sites, the king’s palace, and finally proceed to Lake Kivu to check in your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Boat cruise and transfer to Nyungwe forest national park

Enjoy morning breakfast on the shores of Lake Kivu after which go for a boat ride and explore some of the islands along the lake. After spending half a day on Lake Kivu, you will drive back to your lodge for lunch and then check out and get driven to Nyungwe forest national park a home for chimpanzees. On reaching the park you will proceed to the lodge for check in, dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park

You will have an early morning breakfast and then meet your safari driver guide who will transfer you to the park headquarters for the briefing before starting the actual trek in the forest. During the briefing, the park rangers will tell you about the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking. After briefing the ranger guide will lead you into the forest to search for these primates. While searching chimpanzees you will come across other animals like primates, mammals, and different bird species. On finding the chimpanzees, you will be given a maximum of one hour to stay with them in their natural habitat. After spending an hour with chimpanzees, you will start your journey to the starting point where you will meet your driver guide who will transport you back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, you will go for a canopy walk with a briefing first at the park headquarters. The canopy walk is raised 50 meters above the ground so it will give you an aerial view of the park, the forest animals like the monkeys as well as forest birds. After the canopy walk, you will get back to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Return to Kigali
