This 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda takes you to volcanoes national park located in northwestern Rwanda where you will take part in once in a lifetime gorilla trekking activity which gives you unforgettable memories as you spend a full hour with habituated mountain gorillas in the wild. You will take part in other activities in the park such as the Dian Fossey hike, visit twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo as well as Iby’Iwacu cultural village where you will interact with local people in the community.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to volcanoes national park

on your first day of 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda, you will be welcomed by our safari driver guide who will brief you about the entire safari and then transfer you to Kigali for a city tour. During the city tour, you will visit some of the most interesting places for example the Kigali genocide memorial Centre where you will see photos of victims who died during the 1994 Rwanda genocide. You will take a visit to kirimonko market and interact with the local vendors, visit some of the art galleries among others. After the city tour, you will go for lunch in one of the restaurants in the area where you can order local dishes and then start on your journey to volcanoes national park in the northwest with the journey filled with great views of many rolling hills, beautiful scenery, landscapes among others. Upon arrival, you will check into your accommodation, have dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 2: First gorilla trekking

After early morning breakfast on your second day of 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda, you will carry your packed lunch and meet your driver-guide to drive you to the park headquarters at Kinigi for a briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. After the briefing, you will be grouped not exceeding 8 and each group will be allocated a gorilla family and a guide to lead them into the jungle in search of mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking in volcanoes takes 30 minutes to 7 hours depending on the movement of these giant primates and during the search, you will meet other primates like the vervet monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, forest birds, animals like giant forest hogs, forest elephants, duikers, bush pigs, buffaloes, tree species among others. When you finally find gorillas, you will be given a maximum of one hour to stay with them in their natural habitat giving you a chance to learn about the habits and behaviors, lifestyle, watch them do their daily activities, take photos, and record videos. After enjoying an hour with mountain gorillas, you will trek back to the starting point where you will meet your driver and then drive to the park headquarters to be awarded a gorilla trekking certificate and transfer to the lodge for relaxation dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Second gorilla trekking

On your third day of 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda, you will wake up early morning for a breakfast, get your packed lunch and meet with your driver-guide for a transfer to the park headquarters where you will be briefed about the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking just like the previous day. After the briefing, you will be grouped into 8 trackers and allocated a gorilla family to trek and a park guide who knows very well about the park trails to lead you into the forest. Gorilla trekking takes about 30 minutes to several hours depending on their movement and once they are found you will spend a maximum of one hour with them in their natural environment which helps you to learn about their behaviors, habits watch them do their daily activities, take photos and record videos to compare with the first gorilla trekking experience. After an hour with mountain gorillas, you will trek back to the starting point meet your driver for a transfer back to the lodge for evening relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 4: Dian Fossey hike and cultural tour

After morning breakfast on the fourth day of your 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda, you will get your packed lunch and meet up with your driver for a transfer to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing about the Dian Fossey hike. After the briefing, you will drive to the starting point of the hike where you will meet a ranger guide to lead you to Karisoke research center an institute established by Dian Fossey who dedicated all of her life to conserving mountain gorillas and other primates. When you reach the institute, you will find her grave that is built near her favorite gorilla Digit and other 20 gorilla graveyards of gorilla killed by poachers. After from graveyards you will learn about the lives of endangered mountain gorillas and why conservation is very important. After a visit to the grave, you will have a picnic lunch and later descend back to the starting point where you will find your driver guide to transfer you back to the lodge for relaxation.

In the afternoon hours, you will be taken for a guided cultural tour where you will visit Iby’Iwacu village located near the park. During this cultural tour, you will get a chance to interact with local people among which include ex poachers, know about their way of life, taste local foods, beer made from banana wine, visit farmlands, enjoy dances, drama, songs listen to traditional old stories among others. After the cultural tour, you will drive back to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Twin lakes tour and departure

On the last day of your 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda you will wake into a morning breakfast after which meet your driver-guide and transfer to twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera located at the foothills of mount Sabyinyo, Bisoke, Muhabura, and Gahinga. The twin lakes act as a fishing ground for the neighboring local communities who earn a living from this activity. At the twin lakes, you will have beautiful views of the mountains, hills, bird species, landscapes, enjoy the cool breeze and take photos. After a visit to the queen lakes, you will drive back to the lodge for lunch after which check out for a transfer back to Kigali city or Kigali international airport to end your 5 days luxury gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda
