3 days mount Bisoke and Karisimbi hike is one of the incredible hiking safaris in Rwanda that will take you to volcanoes national park home of rare mountain gorillas in the northwest of Rwanda. Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up and transfer to volcanoes national park

After your early morning breakfast, you need to have a packed lunch and our drive will be ready to transfer you to volcanoes national park. Upon reaching volcanoes national park located in the northwestern part of the country you will go straight to the park headquarters for a briefing at around 7:30 am. After the briefing, you will be given a park guide and you will drive to the starting point of hiking where you will need to buy a hiking stick, hire a porter in case of heavy luggage and then begin hiking mountain Karisimbi which is at an elevation of 4507 meters above sea level. Hiking to the summit of mountain Karisimbi takes you about 6 hours going through different vegetation zones such as bamboo forest, Hagania- hypericum forest, giant lobelia, ridges, volcano edges, steep slopes, calderas with different sounds of birds, primates among others. You will have a stopover at a camp at 3700 meters for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Reach the summit of mountain Karisimbi and descend back

On the second day of your safari, you will wake up with a morning breakfast and then begin hiking to the top where you’ll pass through steep slopes. Upon reaching the summit you will have beautiful views of Nyiragongo and Nyamulangira active volcanoes, surrounding areas, forests, Virunga mountain ranges, take photos, and record videos. After all this, you will start hiking down the mountain which takes you 3 to 4 hours and after reaching the starting point you will find your driver guide ready to transport you to your booked lodge for lunch, relaxation, dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Hike Mount Bisoke and transfer back to Kigali

After morning breakfast, you will need to go with lunch your driver-guide will transfer you to the park headquarters for a briefing. After the briefing, you will be given a park guide to lead you during the hike and the driver will transport you to the starting point where you will need to buy a hiking stick and hire a porter in case of heavy luggage. Hiking mountain Bisoke takes 4 hours to get to the summit and descending is only 2 hours. During the hiking, you will pass through different vegetation zones such as bamboo, sub-alpine, and hypericum with views of animals such as monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes, primates, and different bird species. When you reach the top of mountain Bisoke you will have stunning views of mountain Rwenzori ranges, Virunga ranges, and the forests as you take photos and record videos. From here you will have a picnic lunch. After lunch, you will start descending the mountain to the starting point and upon arrival, you will find your driver guide ready to transfer you back to Kigali for a drop off at your hotel or Kigali international airport.

Important Information on 3 days mount Bisoke and Karisimbi Hike tour

Bisoke Crater Lake hike is the most exciting adventure worth taking part while on your tour in Rwanda. Bisoke volcano is also known as Visoke is current a dormant volcano and part of the Virunga mountain ranges in volcanoes national park alongside mountain Karisimbi, mountain Gahinga, mountain Muhabura and mountain Sabyinyo. Mountain Bisoke has an elevation of 3,711 meters and is found at the borders of Rwanda and DR Congo. Bisoke is a Swahili word to mean soaked with water denoting to the two scenic crater lakes that are on this volcano. One of the Bisoke’s scenic crater lakes is found at the summit and has a diameter of 400m and a depth of 100m. The second scenic crater lakes is located at the sides of Bisoke giving you stunning views of the beautiful mountain Sabyinyo slopes.

Bisoke carter lake hike takes you through the different vegetation zones ranging from hagenia forest to alpine vegetation. Besides that there are many wildlife species that live around this volcano and among these include the forest elephants, golden monkeys, buffaloes, mountain gorillas and many different bird species.

Bisoke crater lake hike is very adventurous and it’s not only done by athletes but also inexperienced hikers. Hiking mountain Bisoke to the top takes you about 4 hours and two hours to climb down the mountain. Hikers to Bisoke Crater Lake are led by park ranger guide after the briefing at 7:00 am at Kinigi park headquarters of volcanoes national park. At 8:00am the ranger guide leads them and they start the actual hike. Hiking mountain Bisoke gives you a chance to see the scenic crater lakes, forest and alpine vegetation as well as different animals such as mountain gorillas, buffaloes, golden monkeys, forest elephants and a number of different bird species among others. Photographing mountain gorillas or golden monkeys is not allowed and only reserved for travelers with gorilla trekking permits. A single gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda is $1500. In Uganda, crater lakes are found in Kibale forest national park located in fort portal, these are Lake Mutuisi and Mwitampungu Crater Lake.

At Kinigi park headquarters of volcanoes national park, you will be required to present your hiking permit, valid passport and other necessary travel documents. From the park headquarters, you will be given a park ranger guide and getting to the starting point of the hiking at the bottom of the mountain might take you about 40 minutes. You are advised to come with a walking stick or buy one at the starting point for $5, packed lunch, energy giving snacks, water or hire a porter in case of heavy luggage. A porter at mountain Bisoke is hired at $10.
