What is the Karisoke research center known for?

Karisoke Research center is a well re-known research institution located in Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park purposely for carrying research and studies about the endangered mountain gorillas. The name Karisoke was obtained from the merging of different works of the two mountains known as Mt Visoke and Mt Karisimbi. The Research center was introduced and established in 1967 during September by Dian Fossey. The Karisoke Research Center is located in between Mountains Karisoke and Visoke.

Karisoke Research center / Dian Fossey Museum just started small in 1967 with only 2 tents purposely you facilitate ranger antipoaching patrols but it kept on expanding and later tuned a huge conservation institution, different scientists and biologists interested in gorilla research have been welcome to this center.

Of the Dian Fossey, the founder of Karisoke Research center died and with the insecurity that hit Rwanda in the 1990s the center survived and it’s around up to now under the auspices of the Diane Fossey Foundation and its headquarters has been shifted to Musanze with well modern facilities and equipment. Karisoke Research Center is now offering training about conservation to the local communities, continued protection of endangered mountain gorillas as well as sustainable research studies about the gorillas in volcanoes National Park.

The increase in the population of mountain gorillas is a result of daily protection and conservation of these species by reducing or stopping the illegal activities that are carried out in protected areas that would cause a threat to gorillas and other primates residing with National parks in particular Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. Illegal activities destroy the habitats and reduce the number of species residing in that particular according to situation analysis by the gorilla fund international.  The local communities around Virunga were found of cutting done of trees, poaching of animals which all this had to stop to give the way for biodiversity richness.

The Gorilla fund international is doing the protection of engendered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park by patrolling the park, reducing the illegal poaching activities as well as integrating the local community into the conservation of both gorilla tourism and their culture so that they can benefit from tourism. The gorilla International fund also extends its funding to gorilla protected in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga gorilla national park found in Uganda and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Most visitors to volcanoes national park in Rwanda can visit Karisoke Research center since it forms one of the major tourist attraction within the park. The fact that the center forms one of the memories of the late Dain Fossey who was an American primatologist who entirely called for the protection of mountain gorillas as she was undertaking the research study about these endangered species. visitors taking the Karisoke research center trail in Volcanoes National Park will explore the museum built at the center with history, biology, and films or videos attached to the work of Dian Fossey towards conservation believe me you will get a memorable experience.

The major activities being conducted by the Kairisoke Research Center as of today include anti-poaching patrols that protect endangered mountain gorillas and other Wildlife species via removal of snare and illegal barricades and to maintain a daily, physical presence with approximately half of the mountain gorillas in Virunga Massif collecting essential demographic, behavioral, health and ranging data that is used in the conservation of the population.
