Rwenzori Mountains Hiking Trails

Rwenzori Mountains hiking trails allow you to explore more details about the mountains. If you’re seeking the most destination in East Africa with the most remarkable experience of hiking, Rwenzori Mountains is your answer. These are hiking trails one can use when trekking Rwenzori Mountains include Kilembe trail, Mahoma trail, central circuit trail, and Bulemba Ihandiro Cultural Trail, all these trails will take you through a beautiful fertile valley, Crater Lake, different primates, and local people around.

Kilembe Trail

Kilembe trail is the newest trail in the park and it was opened in June 2009 that rises on the southern slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains and also a bit challenging. The trail is near Kasese town.  Kilembe trail will take you through beautiful scenery like Nyamwemba valley, mountain Baker and Lake Kitandara

The Central Circuit Trail

This trail is the traditional ones and the oldest trails in the park and it has been used by many hikers who visited Rwenzori. The central circuit trail is somehow challenging but not like the Kilembe trail. This trailhead is at Nyakalengija just 22kilometers from Kasese off the fort portal road. Nyakaengija is where the arrangements take place and it has a safe parking campsite, safe parking near the offices. From Nyakalengija to Mihunga is just 10km. the route will take you to the Bujuku Valley via Nyabitaba for the acclimatization before reaching the peaks, and then join the central circuit immediately after the Bujuku that go through the Scott Elliot and the fresh field through the Mubuku Valley

Mahoma Trail

Climbing from Nyakalengija in Mahoma trail will take you through the Kyambogho ride where Mahoma gives you a chance to have beautiful views of the Rwenzori Mountains and Mubuka valley. As you continue moving, you will see a lot of bird species like a three-horned chameleon, Rwenzori turaco, colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys. Then spend your night at Omuka kizza and continue moving in the bamboo and heather forest, from here you may see some forest elephants or their footprints.

Rwenzori Mountains Cultural Trail

This is the shortest trail in the park. It allows you to explore the Rwenzori Mountains, the popular river known as Mubuku, the culture of the people around the park. Through nature walks and culture tours around offers you the chance to see a lot of birds, some primates like a blue monkey.

Bulemba Ihandiro Cultural Trail

Hiking through this trail will allow you to explore more about Bakozo people around. It also hosts many mammal species including Hyraxes, forest elephants, primates like L’Hoest’s monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, bird species including, the Rwenzori batis, the Archer’s Robin-chat, the Rwenzori Turaco, and many more.

Apart from hiking the Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda has other destinations with wonderful experiences like Bwindi impenetrable national park where you will see the endangered mountain gorillas and also get more chances to explore them. Or visit Murchison falls national park and take a boat cruise on the river Nile where you will see various water wildlife animals like hippos, crocodiles, and many more, or do a game drive and see animals like the buffaloes, giraffes, leopards, rhinos Uganda kob, and many bird species.
