Rwenzori Mountain Peaks- The Rwenzori Mountains are one of the findings when you’re planning a tour safari in East Africa and it is also called the mountain of the moon. It is positioned in the western parts of Uganda.  It is found in the East African Rift Valley and also joins to D.R. Congo. This national park is also known as Virunga National Park in D.R. Congo. The Rwenzori Mountains are the 3rd highest mountain in Africa which stands at an elevation of 5,109 meters.   It has 6 peaks which include Margherita, Mount gessi, Mount speke, Mount Baker, Mount Luigi Di Savora

Margherita peak

Margherita peak is the highest peak on the Rwenzori Mountains as well as in the whole parts of Uganda. It stands at an elevation of 5,109 meters (16,762) on the mountain Stanley in the Rwenzori Mountains. The peak is found between Lake Albert to the north and Lake Edward to the south on the border of Uganda and Congo. It was first hiked by explorer Luigi Amedeo Abruzzi in 1906.

Mount Speke

This peak is the second-highest on the Rwenzori mountain national park and it stands at an elevation of 4,890meters, Mount Baker with Mount Stanley forms a triangle encircling the upper Bujuku Valley. Mount Speke is next to Mount Stanley which is just 3.55 kilometers (2.21 mi) to the south-southwest parts. Both peaks are situated in an area range popularly known as the Mountains of the Moon. It forms a triangle enclosing the upper Bujuku Valley with its nearby peak Mount Stanley

Mount Stanley

Mount Stanley is the highest peak of both Uganda and the DR.Congo at an altitude of 5109meters, 3rd highest peak in Africa after Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. Mount Stanley peak and its neighbor are at a higher altitude enough to upkeep glaciers. It derived its name from an explorer sir Henry Morton Stanley who discovered it in the 1880s back during the colonial exploration period.

Mount Gessi

Mount Gessi is one of the 6 peaks that make up the Rwenzori range. It is found in the north of the triangle-shaped by Mounts Stanley, Speke, and Baker. Mount Gessi is at an altitude of 4,578 meters and 15,018 feet which makes it the 5th tallest mountain in Uganda.

Mount Baker

The peak is located in the rangers of Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda close to the border of DR. Congo. It is also called mountain Kiyanja by the local people around the Rwenzori ranges. Mount Stanley and Mount Speke form a triangle enclosing the upper Bujuku Valley. It takes 2.8 kilometers from the Ugandan border with DR Congo. The mountain stands at an elevation of 4,844 meters (15,892 feet) which making it the 6th highest mountain in Africa.

Mount Luigi Di Savora

This is one of the Rwenzori Mountain Peaks and it is next to Margherita’s peak, it stands at an altitude of 4,537 meters (14,885 feet) about sea level. This making it the 6th as the highest mountain in Uganda.

When you finish hiking the Rwenzori Mountains, you can also plan to visit Bwindi impenetrable forest national park where you will have a chance to do gorilla trekking and get to know more about these shy primates. You may go to Murchison falls national park and see the big five wild animals that are Lion, African elephants, white rhino, cape buffaloes, and leopards.
