Bwindi has almost 10 habituated gorilla families and one of these habituated gorilla family is found in Mubare Gorilla group.
Mubare Gorilla Family in Bwindi
Mubare Gorilla Family is found in Bwindi and is located in the southern western parts of Uganda. Bwindi is a home of 400 mountain gorillas. The park accommodates a half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
Bwindi has almost 10 habituated gorilla families and one of these habituated gorilla family is found in Mubare Gorilla group. This family group was opened for tourism in 1993 and is one of the oldest gorilla family to be opened in Uganda. The word Mubare means Hill in local terms.
The hills are established deep in Bwindi forest, in these hills is where you find the Mubare Gorilla Group that was first seen by tourists.
Silverback Ruhondeza leads Mubare Gorilla family that has 18 family members. The family has been losing its members and it came worse in 2012 as only 5 members were left in the group and it continued to be attacked resulting the takeaway of some females in the family.
Family members were lost during fight that led to death of the offspring’s and also due to migration of members to other gorilla family groups.
On June 2012, Ruhondeza passed away due to old age and died at the age of 50 years. His grave is found in Buhoma sector, do not miss to visit there.
After the passing away of Ruhondeza, silverback Kanyonyi took over power and is the current leader of the family. He has extended his family and expanded it to 8 members.
Trekking for this group goes for a day or 5 hours. You can hike and see the habituated gorilla families in Buhoma sector of Bwindi.
