Lion Tracking Safaris In Queen Elizabeth National Park

Lion tracking safaris in Uganda is done only in Queen Elizabeth national park the second largest national park in Uganda on an area of 1978 sq. km. queen Elizabeth national park is located in western Uganda and is a home of 95 mammals, including the big four which are the lions, buffaloes, elephants and leopards, primates, over 600 bird species, insects, and butterflies. The park was gazetted in 1952 and is famously known for tree-climbing lions

Lion tracking is a unique research experience carried out in Queen Elizabeth National Park only in Uganda. Lions are the second most visited attractions in Uganda after mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga National Park. Lion tracking enables you to track lions in their natural habitats as you get an opportunity to learn more about their behaviors, feeding habitats among others

Lion tracking in Uganda is only done in the eastern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasenyi plains with researchers from Uganda wildlife authority to help you get closer with the lions. Here you will also get to see lions such as elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, bushbucks, bird species i.e. black-bellied bustard, lapwings, crowned plover, African jacana, purple heron, western yellow wagtail, ground hornbill, purple heron, grey crested crane among others.

Lion research tracking is managed by the Uganda carnivore project where they make a research about lions and other carnivores’ animals such as hyenas and leopards. The lions with radio caller are tracked down by the research team and the study is done in one hour, it’s done with the help of radioactive locators to locate where lions could be at a time

How lion research tracking is done:

Lion tracking safaris are done in the morning where you will wake up and board the tour van with the researchers and guides who use directional antennas to trace lions with radio callers attached to them to help you with the lion tracking activity. The lions are spread in Queen Elizabeth national park but lion tracking activity is done in Kasenyi plains because the plains are dominated by savannah grassland that makes observation clear and the plains also harbor several lions. When the visitors see the lions they are allowed to go off track and get close to lions and get an opportunity to take clear photos.

Cost of lion research tracking experience:

The permit for lion research tracking in Queen Elizabeth national park costs USD 50 for foreign nonresidents and foreign residents of Uganda and UGX 100,000 for east African citizens and these fees exclude park entrance fees. USD 10 of the money collected is given to the Uganda carnivore project to look after these lions. Lion tracking permits can be got from Uganda wildlife authority or any trusted Tour Company
