Iteso People Around Mount Elgon National Park

Iteso people around Mount Elgon- Teso originates from the Karamajong in Uganda, though they are not direct descendants of the Karamajong but they have a same cultural ties and linguistic of Karamojongo region. They are influenced by their neighbor cultures including the Luo. The Teso’s closest Kenyan relations are the Pokot. A Kalenjin tribe found in the Western Laikipia and the north of the Cherangani Hills.

By the way, only cultural links of the Teso separate the Pokot from the other affiliates of the Kalenjin collective. The main important variation though is between the Pokot and the Teso. The Pokot have long had two dissimilar tribal units, one cattle herding nomads and the other sedentary agriculturalists. The Teso are initially agriculturalists who lately acquired cattle.

Teso culture is run under a system of age politics. In Teso, you have to respect elders and it is a tradition. The power base for the kingdom is based on the age. The initiation is not done through circumcision rites however it is done through the animal sacrifices and a big feasting is done and energetic young men are separated into age sets as they come to manhood. The Teso people have a belief of the divining power and the power of prophecy. The traditional diviners prophesy about what is going to happen in the future and the signs that will occur when the things are going to happen. The repetition is also done through the traditional beliefs of the northern Kenya tribes which comprise of samburu, pokot and Borana.

Elgon is found directly on the Kenya-Uganda border, a line of irrelevant and fresh importance in the cultural history of the region. Both the Teso and the Saboat have many bonds and cultural ties to Ugandan eastern tribes which include a tribe of close relations also known as the Teso.

Iteso people are physically similar to Maasai people of Kenya, but they are different.  These were of the 4 very small tribes known as  the Kony, Pok, Sapei, and the Bungomek. These tribes are known as the Saboat, and they are also part of the Kalenjin collective.
