Gorilla habituation experience in Uganda is done only in Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park. This is an amazing activity that involves seeing endangered mountain gorillas. The gorilla habituation process is the process where any wild mountain gorillas are trained how to get used to people such that when visitors go trekking them they don’t run mad at them in inflict harm on the visitors. Gorilla habituation experience is led by a team of research hers, rangers, trackers, and the visitors walk into the forests and start the activity of habituating experience. For gorillas to be ready for trekking, they must have to undergo a habituation process that lasts for about 2 to 3 years. In this period, the researcher learns more about individual gorillas, how they feed, breeding and habitats and in the long run, the gorillas as well start getting used to the gorillas and after the researcher name each gorilla’s names and once the researchers are sure that now gorillas are ready for trekking, then the test is done by scientist and guides who start visiting the gorillas slowly and until they are fully used to human beings and they start opening the gorilla family for visitors.
The gorilla habituation experience is done daily in between the sectors of Nkuringo and Rushaga in Bwindi Forest National Park. This wonderful activity starts early at 7:00 am with a briefing about the does and the don’ts while in the forest and when seeing these gorillas being habituated. 4 visitors are allowed to with researchers and guides for this long experiential gorilla habituation activity. The activity may take a half-day or a full day depending on the location of the mountain gorillas to be habituated. The activity of gorilla habituation in Uganda was established by Uganda Wildlife Authority in 2014 after seeing the need to increase the time of visitors with gorillas and the demand from the tourists. Visitors are limited to 4 hours seeing the Gorillas in their natural habitat during this activity of Gorilla Habituation.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is located in south-western Uganda in the districts of Kanungu and Kisoro. The Park is at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and it is near Virunga Massif conservation area the park was declared as the world’s UNESCO Natural Heritage Site in the year 1994. The park is rich in biodiversity with over 400 species of plant, about 120 mammals including the prominent gorillas, baboons, forest elephants, and forest antelopes. The history of gorilla tourism in Uganda started in Uganda and it is estimated the park has over 550 mountain gorillas representing more than half the of the remaining world mountain gorillas. The park is known to have 19 habituated gorilla families that are available for gorilla trekking. Bwindi is the only place in Africa where both gorilla trekking activity and habituation takes place.

Because of such a reason that UWA is aware of, it has relaxed its regulation policy by adjusting the measures for you to reschedule your already booked and purchased gorilla habituation permit to new dates. Visitors will need to have paid the full amount of the habituation permits for them to be able to shift their permits to another date.
Yes, as you wish to reschedule your gorilla habituation experience, you will have to let us know of your new dates when you wish your permit to be placed and then we check with the Uganda wildlife authority on the availability of tickets on that day and one we have confirmed the availability and the permit will be rescheduled. Remember that during peak season the permits tend to be sold out so you must check the dates so that the perfect dates are already booked and once the date has already been booked then you will have to apply for a new date. When your permit has been Rescheduled, it means that your travel dates as well have changed. The gorilla habituation permit allows spending 4 hours with gorillas in their natural habitat. The gorilla habituation permit in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is 1500 United States dollars for Foreign-Nonresidents, then 1000 united states dollars for Foreign Residents and only Uganda shillings 750,000 per person for East African nations. Since these gorillas are very sensitive and endangered, it is our obligation to conserve them for future generations and the following are some of the procedures which one can follow when gorilla habituation activity can change over time;
All visitors must have a valid gorilla habituation permit which they must book in advance. These permits are sold by the Uganda wildlife authority and they are paid at USD1500.00 per person per trek for four hours.
Also like it is in gorilla trekking, all visitors to participate in gorilla habituation activity must be 15 years of age and above to increase the safety of the gorilla and those involved since young travelers of below 15 years are difficult to control.
As you start your journey to Bwindi forest for gorilla habituation, you should avoid making noise, just speak with a low voice in order not to obstruct nature. Just keep low as you observe different animal and bird species within the forest.
You don’t need to litter your water plastic bottles or polythene anyway in the trash you pass through while trekking gorillas just drop trash in the designated trash cans. This is done to conserve the environment.

All travelers for gorilla habituation and trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park must keep a distance of 7-5 meters away from mountain gorillas to limit the chance of disease spread from humans to gorillas.
There is no need to use flash while taking photograph and it is not allowed to eat, touch or drink while doing the gorilla habituation process
Do not use flash while taking photos, avoid eating and drinking during gorilla habituation activity.
In case you need to go for a short or long call just ask your guide to arrange for you a toilet or dig a hole within the forest. In case you develop sickness, you will be required to stay behind as the UWA plans to arrange for you another gorilla habituation experience.
To engage in the Gorilla Habitation experience, visitors will have to either fly to Bwindi impenetrable forest national park via Entebbe International Airport /Kajjansi airstrip to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrip or you can drive by road to the southwestern part of Uganda where the park is situated. Thus the park can as well be accessed using both air and road transport, by road transport, you drive for about 8 to 9 hours to reach the park headquarters. Despite the long road trip to Bwindi forest, this presents an opportunity for you to spot birds as you head to the park due to various stopovers you will make as you proceed, you can make a stopover at Mbarara, Igongo cultural center, and at the equator line for wonderful photography. As you can decide to use the air transport by flying to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi airfield. There is also an option that you can fly to Kigali international airport and then access Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park via Katuna or Cyanika border, a journey that will take you only 4hours from Kigali international airport to Bwindi Forest. It is always good to have an East African Visa that will enable you multiple entries into the East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. The East African Visa costs United States dollars 100 and you don’t need to waste time but you can as well get it on your arrival at the airport in the quickest and shortest time possible. Single entry visas are also available and you will need to pay USD 50 and 30 for Uganda and Rwanda visas respectively. Despite its safety of bird watching, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is also a destination that is very accessible.
