Gorilla habituation experience is the slow and mild introduction of wild mountain gorillas to get used to human presence. Wild Mountain gorillas are habituated to enable researchers study their species, treat them in case of sickness and injuries, protect them from poachers and to boost their conservation efforts with sustainable tourism.

Mountain gorilla habituation in Bwindi impenetrable national park is only done in Rushaga sector and 2 gorilla families that is Bukingi and Bushasho are currently being habituated in this sector of the park in order to become used to human presence around them. Each gorilla family takes about 3-5 hours to become fully habituated by a group of expert researchers, conservationists, rangers and trackers.

National park rangers begin the habituation process by spending a few hours with the mountain gorillas each day, maintaining a specific distance at the limit of the mountain gorilla’s comfort zone. As the months go by the rangers increase on the time they spend with mountain gorillas and even reduce on the distance until they are sure that the gorillas are ready for tourists to visit them.
