Facts About Kahuzi Biega National Park In Congo

Are you looking for quick facts about Kahuzi Biega? Well, this a national park found in DR Congo. It is found in the nearby areas of Bukavu which is close to the Congo border with Rwanda which is found in the west side of Lake Kivu. This park is made up of lowland and highland sectors which are connected to a narrow corridor. The park is rich in flora and fauna and was established in 1970. The park’s entrance to the park is found in the eastern side of Tshivanga.

Kahuzi Biega is among the 2 parks that have lowland gorillas in the world. The second park that has lowland gorillas is Maiko National Park which is also found in DR Congo.

There are around 600 gorillas staying in the park by 1990 and currently they have around a hundred gorillas still existing and this reduction was due to the fights of the 2000s and 1990s.

The park is under the management of Congolais pour la conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and also under Wildlife Conservation Society.

The park was established in 1970 and was opened currently in 2015. The park was opened by Adrien Deschryver a Belgian photographer and conservationist.  He also participated in gorilla habituation during his stay at the park.

Kahuzi Biega has two dormant volcanoes within the park. These are Mount Biega (2,790 m) and mount Kahuzi (3,308 m).

The park is among the largest parks found in DR Congo with at least 2 sectors that is lowland which is closed for visits and Highland which is open for visits.

Kahuzi Biega has been listed on the world heritage site of 1980 and it hosts around 2000 lowland gorillas of the world.

Kahuzi Biega has 3 gorillas groups that are habituated for visits by the tourists.

The park doesn’t have lowland gorillas only but it has other animals such as the forest Elephant, Forest Hog, Antelopes and the bush duikers.
