Buffaloes of Kidepo Valley National Park

Are there buffaloes in Kidepo valley National park?  Kidepo valley national park lies in the North-Eastern part of Uganda in the district of Kaabong.   The park offers the best sceneries for wildlife lovers and visitors to the park. The African buffaloes sometimes called the cape buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) belong to the Bovini tribe where wild and domesticated cattle and American bison do fall and it is only the African mammals that are a member of this family.  By its nature, the African buffaloes are made of short and powerful limbs and a mature one weighs up to   900 kilograms. The horns of the buffaloes stretch to1.6 meters and are used for protection and defend themselves against enemies. The predators such as lions mainly. Horns are also significant in portraying the dominance between male and female buffaloes. There is a compacted, hard shield in the between horns of a male buffalo which is called the boss.

In most cases, the African buffaloes don’t have good eyesight however their smell and hearing capacity is of great hype and so brilliant. The African buffalo exist on symbiotic relations ships with several bird species and believe me your visits to Kidepo valley national park will make you see birds sometimes on top of the buffaloes what you can term as “buffaloes carrying birds” such as the Oxpecker white egrets among many others. The gestation period of buffaloes is estimated to be 11 months and once produced, calves lie in their mother’s protection till they become old and join the herd. Buffaloes including their calves rush to swamps and riverbanks sometimes to cool their temperature when the temperatures rise.

Other than buffaloes in Kidepo valley national park, there are other animals that one can see within this park and these include zebras, leopards, giraffes, lions. Bushbucks, impala, and elephants plus unique bird species living in breathtaking landscapes of the Park.
