These two are called twin lakes because of their closeness to each other, they are separated by a 1km wide strip of land. Twin lakes Ruhondo and Burera are formed as a result of volcanicity due to a volcanic eruption that happened on mountain Sabyinyo forcing lava to flow volcanoes that blocked the river Nyiragongo channel leading to the formation of these twin lakes. Lake Ruhondo and lake Burera waters are 180 meters deep and are regarded safe for human activities the fact that there are no predators such as crocodiles. The twin lakes are surrounded by mountains such as Sabyinyo, Bisoke, Karisimbi, Gahinga, and Muhabura and large waterfalls giving the area a beautiful view.

1 Day Rwanda twin lakes cycling tour

The cycling tour starts from Musanze town with a guide who will brief you about the journey early morning at 8. 00 am. The journey from Musanze town to lake Ruhondo and lake Burera is 17km which means the coming back is another 17km making 34km in total. The tour will go through trading centers and different villages. You will have a chance to interact with the local people of Rwanda on your way, the young children love to see bicycles and tourists passing by so they will be ready on the roads to say bye to share greetings with you. when we arrive at these lakes, you will have to cross using canoes to Ruhondo resort for some lunch. If you are a bird lover you will see different bird species while crossing the lake such as the cormorant, herons, kingfisher, Africa fish eagle, darters, and hamerkop.
